All other marine handheld GPS units pale when compared to the GPSMAP 76C and GPSMAP 76CS—literally. The latest color-display technology gives both units the brightest, sunlight-readable displays available. And with brand-new state-of-the-art receivers and powerful microprocessors, these units will give you a quick and steady fix. Both the GPSMAP 76C and GPSMAP 76CS have the familiar GPS 76-family keypads and styling, with 115 MB of memory, an Americas Autoroute basemap, and a Marine Point database. Fast USB connectivity makes loading charts and maps quick and easy, while navigation instructions can be shared with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots using NMEA protocols through the dedicated serial port. They’re waterproof and fully compatible with MapSource products like BlueChart®, U.S. Topo 24K, and City Select® (which provides detailed streets for turn-by-turn guidance).

 "Proven handheld very reliable" 2010-01-19
By E. Gold (So California)
I have used and abused this handheld Map 76 for 5 years. It has been onboard with me from alaska to New Zealand. I often crew on lots of other peoples vessels and I am always glad to have this little GPS with me. I have the Blue Chart America CD downloaded with the California to Mexico portion of detailed maps as that is where I usually cruise and they have great detail. The battery life is exceptional although I usually attach it to a cig lighter outlet whenever I can to save batteries. On my Catalina 42 I have a bicycle mount on my Binnacle and a plug that integrates it with power and data to my auto pilot. The little GPS runs the whole boat from that connection to my Raytheon instruments. I also save all my traks and download them to my computer to save information and routes. It is also useful to study races to see where I have called the wrong tactics on the race course. I also own the updated color version of this unit but in reality I prefer the interface and practicality of this Grayscale version. If I had to choose one I would pick the Map76 without the color. You can usually find the BlueChart CD on line for under $100.00 and that is much more valuable than the Color version that cost about a $100.00 more.......begold

"Not Mac compatible, hard to create waypoints" 2010-01-12
By Grady Morgan (TX)
I haven't seen this written explicitly, anywhere, so here goes: This thing isn't mac compatible. Using a serial to USB converter, and some free software (Garmin software will be no help) you can get to the gps data on windows, but good luck if you're on a mac.

Also, it is really hard to create new waypoints on the water. This is because if you try and create a waypoint too close to a known feature (such as a highway, intersection, or BODY OF WATER), the GPS will try and use the center of the feature (or something like that). So, to create waypoints over water, your only solution is to manually enter the lat and long (you can't use the cursor to select a point).

"Nice screen and maps, but missing a few features" 2009-11-24
By C. Taricska (Lansing, MI)
The maps are nice, but the user interface is lacking. We travel all over Michigan and visit many lakes and this unit works great after loading the necessary maps, to see where you are. The only problem is when we are looking for a set of GPS coordintes, it is nice to see the compass and the coordinates on the same screen, like the older garmin 12 was able to do. With this unit you cannot get both on the same screen. The compass is on one screen, and you position is on another. If you are looking for an exact spot, it is nice to see your coordintes change and the N S E W heading as you are moving, otherwise you have to guess which way is up, so to speak, especially when you are in a boat moving around quite a bit.

 "Great back up GPS" 2009-10-28
By B. Okrajek (Florida)
Bought this as a back up for a boat. Work good, sometimes seems to be off by more than 100 feet, even when located 5 or more satelites.

Good battery life, easy to navigate menus.

Manufacturer should provide GPS-to-USB connector, not only to-Serial, which is not common these days, especially on laptops.

Once connected to PC and software installed, easy to back up and load maps and routes.

"excellent for jetski/small boat; shop elsewhere for roadmaps" 2009-09-06
By Andrew C. Flick (Atlanta, GA USA)
We use this GPS on our SeaDoo GTX, and are very satisfield with its performance out on the water. We use the default maps which came with the unit.

This product works well, but the default maps are not detailed and key roads are missing and are often mislabelled. Using this product to navigate roads would be awful. However, navigation by water is a little better. Several buoys and markers are correct and are in the expected positions on the map. The features which are the most helpful are 1) the breadcrumb trail which is automatically generated and 2) the backlight LCD screen which was a HUGE help to us on a recent trip (from Pt Judith, RI to Block Island, RI) where we got caught out at sea at dusk. This GPS allowed us to follow our earlier-marked trail, so that even though we were out on the ocean and couldn't see very far, we just followed our trail by GPS and navigated home safely. It's also easy to mark points of interest which is critical to finding your way back to the boat ramp in an unfamiliar place!

The item is totally waterproof, and for novice users (like us!), it took about 20 minutes to read through the manual and get up to speed on the key features. It is easy to mark waypoints and good for displaying speeds, time, and the direction we're headed. The item also clearly displays latitude and longitude, so if we had engine problems out on the water, i'm confident we could radio in our position from the GPS and get picked up rather easily.

I wish the screen was a little more resolute. We often have to stop the jetski to take a look at this GPS to figure out where we are and where we are headed, but it's a small price to pay for having the piece of mind out on the water.

 "Disappointed" 2010-01-11
By JStath
I had been looking at this sport watch for 6 months, and had read the reviews in Runners' World. I felt I had researched well, and my husband ended up purchasing this for me for Christmas. I have yet to be able to use the watch while running because it is very difficult to figure out. I have a master's degree, and use electronics frequently, so one would think I could easily figure this out. I tried several times, and my niece also worked on it for a week. No luck. I had one more person to try, and he had gotten other runners' watches working. It took him several hours, but he did get it working. I have not yet had the time to try it out, but I will say that if I still can't get it to work, it goes back. All I am interested in right now is my time, pace, and distance. Another MAJOR complaint is that the owners manual is not packaged with it! There is a quick start guide that was worthless. I did what it said and got nowhere. I spent over $200 for the watch and footpod, and then I am expected to print out the owners manual on my printer (40 pages!)? So, I hope that once I can use this watch, it works, and that I have to rewrite this review.

By Robert A. Duggan (Narragansett, RI)
Well, I received this as a Christmas gift and I read all the negative reviews and have to say on initial startup, I couldn't disagree more. With much trepidation, I found the installation and startup very easy and flawless! I installed on my PC and laptop with ease. Unfortunately, there is snow on the ground and I can't try it on the course. Perhaps the software has improved, but so far I am pleasantly surprised. Yearly cost is a little disturbing, but if it works, to me it's worth the expense as I play many different courses, especially when on vacation. I used the SG3 earlier in year and loved it, hopefully this performs as well.

"Doesn't Work With Snow Leopard" 2009-11-24

I upgraded my MacBook with Snow Leopard. Now I can't sync the caddie and so I can't access courses or upgrade software. SkyCaddie Support says they do not have a fix and are "working on it." After 3 months, there is still no fix. Along with the annual fees and the course lockout if you don't renew, I'd say buy something else, particularly if you use a Mac with Snow Leopard.

"redesign of the original astro (orange) transmitter" 2009-09-15
By HMMWV (santa clara, CA USA)
The original astro came packaged with a small rechargable orange transmitter and a velcro harness to put it on your dog. Anyone mixing velcro and dog hair knows what happens next. There was also a plastic clip you could use to screw the transmitter onto your dog's existing collar, but my dog broke 2 of those clips giving chase.

When the DC30 came out it was a major improvement. Garmin realized that the heavy transmitter would sag down where the dog tags hang, so the put it there intentionally instead of forcing it on top.

The passive antenna in the original unit was replaced with an active amplified gps antenna sewn into the collar facing the sky. A small thin cable is hidden in the collar to carry the gps signal down to the transmitter below.

Finally, the transmit antenna was redesigned for vhf frequencies and realizes 1dB more gain over the previous transmitter - not alot but still an improvement.

In short, the DC 30 makes the astro a real dog tracker. I bought the collar separately and was immediately impressed. No longer did I have to scrape dog hair from the velcro on their earlier design!

"Exclent new Product! Awesome design!" 2009-03-08
By Renato Ostilla (Caracas, Venezuela)
With the initial purchase of the Astro system more than one year ago,I have purchased two more, old design DC-10s, and all three broke the antennas or lost the sleeve after the first or second hunting. They are definitely not properly design to hunt in difficult dense bushes . The antenna in the old DC-10 is terrible and get damaged when the dog has to cross a barbed wire line and the neoprene harness tends to deteriorate quickly. Recently I bought one of the new DC-30 and am very satisfied. It is a totally new concept. Rugged, easy to clean after the hunt and always stays in the proper position in the neck of the dog thanks to a very balanced weight design. The new antenna which is much more flexible and thinner stays at the side of the neck and never moves from the upwards position. Really Garmin had made his homework with the DC-30! Have used it in several hunting trips and the collar is like new.I am buying more to replace the old ones.

"Updates for Magellan 1475T not available for Apple Users" 2010-01-21
By Grape Maven (Southern Shores, NC)
I bought a Roadmate 1475T at Costco and used it for awhile. Good overall but it did not identify some locations. I then tried to get a software update directly from the Magellan website. Much to my chagrin there are NO upgrades for Apple/Safari users!! I sent note off to their customer support team and they responded:

Thank you for contacting Magellan Technical Support. We apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing now. As I understand, you are looking for updates for your Roadmate 1475T that will work with an Apple computer.

Unfortunately, as of this time, Magellan devices and software are not yet compatible with a Mac computer. We have already forwarded this concern to the correct department since we have many customers who use Mac computers. We will make another follow-up on your behalf. For the meantime, may I just verify if there is really no way for you to have access or use a computer with Windows XP or Windows Vista OS (Operating System)?

Bottom line: If you use an Apple with Safari you are out of luck to get updates to your maps.

"A culmination of other reviewers points" 2010-01-18
By la10slgr (Colorado Springs, CO)
Okay, in trying to buy a new gps I read all of the reviews I could get my hands on about the 1470/1475t (same gps, t = traffic cable included) and now that I purchased the Magellan 1475t I would like to throw my hat into the ring on this. I have never used a Garmin or Tomtom so I cannot compare among brands, only my thoughts on this specific model are provided. Here are my thoughts (I am trying to give you info not present in the other reviews or clarify confusing info only, so this is not a complete run-down of the 1475t):

- It DOES have a qwerty keyboard, all you have to do is update to the new software (free) and then you can choose between qwerty and abc

- it is pretty easy to use the POI and address inputs as a way of getting where you need to go. I find it very easy to input destinations using the variety of options (exact address, POI's, destination prediction)

- I like the "exit predictor" (it shows you a little diagram with what lane you should be in) it is specific to your exact location. For example; if you are on a 5 lane highway and the 2 left lanes veer left and the 3 right lanes veer right, it will show 2 different freeway signs (the left one has 2 lanes, the right one has 3 lanes) and fade out the wrong way and keep the correct sign/direction bright, very handy in my opinion.

- I haven't had any problems with things being on the wrong side of the streets or in different locations altogether.

- the banner ads really aren't too intrusive (and I hate pop up ads), if that's what I have to put-up with for lifetime free traffic than I think it is a fair trade

- The multiple stop (trip) programming is a little less intuitive but that could be due to the user, not the device. It seems that once you got to destination "a", it doesn't know when you leave and go to destination "b, it would want to take me back to "a".

- the 1475t takes longer to start up than my maestro 4000, but once it starts going it is pretty responsive, my guess is that it has a lot more data to process upon start up considering all it can do that my 4000 could not.

- the voice quality is not that bad. Considering all of the nuances of the English language it is actually pretty good. I especially like that it says the street name when telling me to turn, takes some of the guesswork out knowing exactly when to turn (in the past I found myself asking "does it mean this street that I am at RIGHT NOW or the one that is just a little bit ahead????")

- Traffic: it appears to work but wasn't able to utilize it in Denver as there were no accidents to avoid, so no good report from me on this. Limited in usefulness now as it is only available in MAJOR cities (not Colorado Springs for instance, maybe someday...)

- The connection for the cable is as bad as everyone has reported, terrible design and even worse quality control by Magellan for not correcting this. 1st, the connection is right next to the mount and so it does get in the way and it is not easy to plug in. Why can't this be on the side where common sense says it should be? 2nd, the cable is in an "L-shape" and that compounds the problem by forcing the cable to the center, thus, more interference from the mount. 3rd, the cable being on the bottom does interfere with positioning of the gps while in the mount and in use (in my case, the cable pushes the gps up as I have it mounted on my dash and there isn't enough clearance between the gps and the dashboard for the rigid cable connection).

- The AAA guidebook is a nonissue for me, I had it on my 4000 as well and never used it for anything but I guess in the right hands it could be useful (those that need a hotel or AAA approved auto repair).

- Boo to Magellan for 2 omissions; they did not include an ac (home plug-in) adapter nor did they provide a soft case to store it in (my Maestro 4000 came with these), all about those profit margins I guess...

Overall, I think this is a great gps and you get a lot of bang for your buck in features. Some other reviewer reported you could get it for $150 at some place called "BJ's" but I didn't bother looking that up until after I paid $[...] (d'oh!!!). I would recommend this gps and would give it an 8/10 with the 2 points off coming from the cable connection and lack of charging cable for home and no case. I hope you find this review helpful as I usually don't post reviews but felt compelled to on this one as there was a lot of contrasting information on other reviews and wanted to clear up some information for future users.

 "Great GPS" 2010-01-01
By S. Wade (Ann Arbor, MI)
I purchased this for my finacee for Christmas and I'm in love with it! The traffic link is really neat, but I really dislike the "exclusive offers" it provides. It is more like advertisements, though since the screen is so large it is easily ignored. There is more than enough room on the screen for all of the icons and it finds signals and recalculates quickly. It even detected our driveway at our house when we calculated a route from our livingroom! The POI's on it are very useful- when our "check engine" light came on when we were on the express way, we simply searched for the closest Autozone and added it as an additional destination in our route!

"A fully-featured, easy to use navigation system" 2009-12-29
By E. Bowdish (Washington)
There are many kinds of GPS units on the market today, and choosing the right one is sometimes a difficult task. Having recently purchased and used the Magellan RoadMate 1475T, I can guarantee that there is very little to be disappointed in.

The Magellan RoadMate 1475T is a sleek unit with a generous 4.7 inch, very responsive touch screen. Getting it set up is a cinch. Just mount the suction cup to the window or dashboard with the included accessories, plug in the included DC power cord (which includes the traffic receiver) and you are ready to go. The Magellan unit boots up and grabs satellites in an acceptable amount of time, generally around 30 seconds or so. Of course, with the built in battery, you can set up the route before you get in the car.

As of version 2.20 of the GPS software, the RoadMate 1475T provides two options at its home screen: "GO TO" and "VIEW MAP." From there, setting up the receiver is pretty straightforward. The Magellan GPS units include the AAA Tourbook, which provides additional information about certain points of interest. I found this information to be really handy. The rest of the "Points of Interest" database is hit or miss. While I found a good amount of everything included, in the small town where I live, it left out a few major locations, including our fairly large (and only) grocery store, as well as two of our most popular gas stations (one of which has a restaurant, also not listed).

The actual route planning of the Magellan is good. It almost always provided accurate street names, and usually took me on the most efficient route to my destination. A neat feature of this GPS is the ability to choose whether you would like the fastest or shortest route, or one with mostly freeways or one that avoids freeways. The receiver quickly calculated times and distances for each option, and allows you to exclude a specific maneuver if you wish to avoid a certain road or section of town, for instance.

The voice prompts and the included speaker prove to be configured nicely. Some directions are hard to understand if the speaker is turned up all the way, but usually I had no trouble following its directions. One thing I would like to see is a feature that would automatically adjust the volume based on ambient road noise, but adjusting the volume while on the move is fairly easy from the map screen.

Other features like lane assist, which shows mockup traffic signs while on the freeway, add a bit more confidence to the trip, and the subscription-free traffic receiver is a definite plus and a good bargain when included with the unit as it is with the 1475T.

I did encounter a couple of freeze-ups since I have bought the product. One incident occurred when I was adding an address to the address book, the other when I clicked around on the screen a little too fast.

There are many other features included with this Magellan RoadMate, much too numerous to describe in detail here. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what this GPS has to offer. I haven't extensively used any of the competitors like Garmin or Tom Tom, but having researched them, I can guarantee this Magellan rates right up there in value. In fact, some features like the AAA Tourbook and the convenient one-touch menu provide functionality not found in any competitors and may be worth considering.

Note: I do recommend visiting the Magellan website after you have purchased one of these GPS units and downloading the latest software updates for it. This will provide you with many new features and increased speed, reliability, and better routing algorithms.

 "great value for money" 2009-12-27
By Electronics buff (Orlando, FL)
We decided we needed a GPS for our trip which we are on right now, especially because our plan included driving in the Smoky Mountains area. I didn't want to spend $200-$300 on a device which I wasn't even sure of retaining, so I just grabbed the Magellan 1475T which came at an incredible price of $149.99+tax at BJs. We've been using this for the last 8 days, and will continue to use this until our return. I am simply amazed at the features & performance- the GPS locks to a satellite signal within 10-12 seconds of being switched on, even when I tried it from within our hotel room. Contrary to what another user has mentioned, this GPS does have a virtual QWERTY keyboard. And its ability to show a list of matches even as I type the first 2-3 letters is quite useful and time-saving. It allows one to save an address to the address book right away from the search results. We've used it in the Smoky Mountains area, and interior rural areas in OH- it has never failed to lead us to the correct address, and on the correct side of the road. It has everything a good GPS has to have- Estimated Time of Arrival, Total distance, distance left, turn-by-turn list, current speed/ direction, and quite a few more. It announces the next exit or turn 2 miles ahead, and then 0.5 miles ahead, and once again just before the actual exit/ turn, announcing the exit number/ road number/ street name each time. Another great feature is the built-in AAA TourBook which allows one to scout around for nearby attractions even as one is driving.

A device has to do its main job satisfactorily, and this GPS exceeds expectations. It is highly intuitive, and I have been able to use this to good effect without ever having to consult the manual to learn how to use a specific feature. The absence of add-on features such as Bluetooth, MP3 player etc. does not bother me, because I wanted a good GPS, and this is a fantastic bargain. We are very happy with the Magellan 1475T & have decided to retain it. I have used a Garmin 760 a few months ago but returned it as I was not very happy with its performance- it was very slow in getting a satellite signal, and it seemed to be trying to be everything (GPS, MP3, Bluetooth) but ended up not being particularly good at anything.

 "Very useful training aid" 2010-01-10
By Runnin' guy (Fort Worth, TX USA)
I had considered getting myself one of these for some time but had decided against it. Then I got one for Christmas from a very thoughtful friend and am delighted with it. It is a great training aid for any serious runner. It has features for interval training I haven't even used yet. It's easy to use once you get the hang of it. One warning: you may discover, like I did, that you're running a lot slower than you thought you were but, of course, that's useful information. I was concerned it would feel bulky on my wrist but I hardly know it's there. It picks up the GPS signal quickly and although it can momentarily be fooled when I run through a heavily wooded area, it quickly adjusts once I am back in the open. Highly recommended.

"MORE FUN ON THE RUN" 2010-01-09
By PATRICK E (SOUTH FLORIDA)
I have owned a Forerunner for almost a year and have loved it from the first run. I am so enthusiastic about the Forerunner, that I gave both my running adult children (21 y/o daughter, 30 y/o son) one for Christmas this year, and they both love it, as both have used mine during the past year. It is easy to use, and the face is just the right size so that the numbers are easy to read. I love the freedom that it provides, in that,I can run anywhere and have an accurate milage count, while being able to monitor my pace. It's great, after a run, to record my average pace, best pace, and calories burned, in addition to my overall time. Although I have not yet utilized the GPS route track to find my way back to the run starting place, it is good to know that it is available if I ever need it. The other features such as the history, coach, etc. are also great to have. Lastly, the cost of the Forerunner is very reasonable for a GPS, and won't break the budget. I deffinitely give this a "two running shoes up," and recommend it for anyone who runs, or walks.

"Probably worth the investment if you're not sure about the newer, pricier models..." 2010-01-06
By Robert Schmidt (Honolulu, HI & Logan, UT USA)
Open box. Insert batteries. Take outside. Push power on button. When location is "captured" (there's a progress bar noting satellite acquisition), velcro on wrist. Push button for starting your walk or run. Go for your walk or run. At conclusion, press stop button. Read pace and distance. Press power off button.

That's how easy this was to operate the first time. I've now used it for 6 six mile runs.

Yes, I've been drooling over the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor, but you can pick this 101 model for under a hundred dollars. Give it a try, and see if a GPS unit works for you. And if you do upgrade to a 305, well, now you have a backup, or can attach it to your bike.

I'm 6 foot tall, and this might seem big on a smaller person's wrist. It's okay for me, and the digital readouts are very easy to read while running.

There are other bells and whistles, including a virtual running buddy to pace yourself, compass directions to your starting point, lap information, and more. But I really wanted an accurate note of my time and distance. So my Manoa Valley run went from 5.5 to 6.0 miles (Gmaps Pedometer versus this Forerunner), and my Diamond Head run went from 6.0 to 6.6 miles. In both cases, I suspect the Forerunner was the more accurate (in Gmaps Pedometer, you have to straighten some curved trails). BUT.. you can lose signal contact in dense vegetation.

I'm going to have fun with this!

 "Garmin 101" 2009-10-30
By Beth H. Dwyer (Golden, CO)
Disappointed with the unit. It has great capabilities and the price was right, but the pace function does not work dependably, and the battery life does not appear to be the 14 hours advertised. I needed a battery operated unit so that I could use the Garmin while hiking peaks from a backpack/backcountry situation, therefore being able to replace batts and use it every day, and during the pack, to track elevation and distance, etc. I have the 201 for day hikes, which charges electrically. It could be operator error, but battery life should not be...

 "satisfied" 2009-10-12
By C. Harrison (AL)
This is the first & only gps watch I have owned. I live in a rural area with no tall buildings. I have been very satisfied with the Forerunner 101 as compared to the cost. I typically turn it on and set it on my front porch a few minutes before I run. 98% of the time I have no problems, when I have a problem it's with signal strength. I love having time/pace/total distance all displayed at once. The distance seems to be very accurate & consistant. I was afraid the bulk of the watch would bother me but it hasn't. Two AAA batteries are lasting me over 50 miles which is not bad if you only run 10-15 miles a week like me. I recently ran my first half-marathon and enjoyed being able to go back on the watch and see my pace for each mile of the race.
