Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too.
The nüvi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use.
The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, "listen." The other is, "stop listening". Hit the "listen" button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, "find nearest Italian restaurant," for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say "go to" and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, "find place, Starbucks," if that's your coffee mojo.
Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it.

FM Traffic 
| With an optional receiver, you can get alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.
In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.
The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. |

This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
Garmin's "Where Am I?" feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.
On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say "Where am I?" to get the info.
Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. I bought a new Acura MDX and was unwilling to pay the extra dollars for the GPS. So, I got this one. It's terrific. The screen is good sized and clear. Directions are very good. What surprises me is the quality of the voice recognition. I'd size it's close to the quality of the built in of my old Acura MDX, which was as good as I've seen. You can also use a USB cable and send directions to it from Google maps! It's not difficult to do. I don't know if I'll ever buy another built in, considering the pricing.

This is my third Garmin GPS and do not even consider any other brand. I ordered it to replace a Garmin Nuvi 350 because of the features like voice command, etc. It was an Amazon.com "closeout special" at a great price. However when it arrived and I was unpacking it, my wife said " Oh, you bought me a new GPS, I was looking for one, but didn't know what kind to buy". So now, I'm a hero and she has a new GPS. Guess I should have ordered two. She has a Toyota Prius with built in navigation and now uses the Garmin 850 because it is so much more accurate and shows so many more streets.

My wife suggested we buy a GPS unit for our van to use on an upcoming family vacation drive. I did a fair amount of researching and evaulating different units on the Internet before deciding the Nuvi 850 was the one for us. We couldn't be happier with it. It worked perfectly well, and the voice recognition feature is amazing. The Nuvi 850 made our whole drive much more enjoyable and relaxed. We highly recommend this unit! It was a terrific bargain,too.

In the last several months I have been looking for a good GPS to replace a Garmin Nuvi 765 that I purchased not to long ago. The last GPS that I looked at was the TomTom 740 Go Live that got returned.
I use my GPS every day to drive from location to location around the nation's 6th largest city.
The GPS works mich like every other GPS that I have ever purchased from Garmin from the Street Pilot 330 to this GPS. Screens and maps are pretty much the same. Easy to read not a lot of detail, but enough to get you around, with simple colors for us of the color blind community.
The best part I like about the Garmin line is when you are approaching your final destination, the GPS tells you and also informs you if the location is on the right or left as well as displaying the address you are looking for. (TomTom does not have this feature).
Ket's get onto the voice commands. The voice commands are wonderful. If it is on the screen, say the item and then ythe screen changes. Inputting and address using voice command is really simple too. Depending on what "voice" you choose will determine how long it takes to enter the address. For example, the Matt voice, I did not have to wait for the computer to ask for the city, I just said it, but with the other voices, you have to wait for the GPS to ask you for the city and the state the city. If you have ever worked with a garmin GPS before, the voice commands and just like touching the screen, but you are using your voice. Very Nice.
Another interesting thing this GPS does is play games. Not really what you purchase a GPS for but it is a nice addition.
Dislike: One thing that I really liked about the TomTom was the saftey camera warning. Very nice feature, althoug 10 dollars per month. Garmin does offer the saftey camera warning but only for Europe, at the time of this writing.
A small moderate problem was the voice did not work if the radio was on. Seems like a weird complaint, but the TomTom 740 worked with the radio on and A/C blowing on high.
After all is said and done, this GPS rates at a real strong four stars. For the new lower price, who can complain. Oh, the GPS has been discontinued from the Garmin line.
