I bought this gps watch for my wife for Christmas. She's into running quite a bit. She just finished up her first half-marathon 5 months ago and we are headed to another one next week. I've seen her use this to collect and view all sorts of data related to her running. Although the model we bought did not come with the heart rate monitor, we did go out and purchase it shortly after.



Pros:

Lots of data collected to allow you to view tons of different stats about your run.

Transfers data from the watch to the computer and up to your Garmin account quickly and easily (transfers from watch to computer without having to plug anything in).

Graphs and charts on Garmin's site to display all the data is easy to read and very informative.

Works well indoors and outdoors

Setup one time and then you're good to go



Cons:

The initial set-up of the watch was a bit of a task. My wife is not the most technologically inclined person, but with a little help from running friends and some manual readying, she was able to set it up pretty well.

The cost (a little pricey, but well worth it in the long run)



Overall:

An excellent watch for runners who are serious about tracking their pace, paths, heart rate, etc.

I have had the Garmin 405 with heart monitor for a year and a half now. I use it quite intensively for both biking and running.



The first watch I received had a defective GPS reception and I got a replacement which works flawlessly (thanks Amazon for the great post sale service).



I have had no issues with rain (I just block the bezel and have the watch cycle automatically through the needed information), ease of use, GPS reception, thickness, etc. I recently ran a marathon and the watch calculated 42.4 km which is only 0.2 km (0.5%) above the official distance. Given that we need to do some lateral movements to pass other runners, get drinks, etc. I think this is a great result.



I agree with many reviewers who find the PC software package underwhelming; however I get by by using a free third party log program (RunningAHEAD which, among other things, does a great job at importing all the GPS data).



I really miss the 'sleep' feature available in the Polar watch. It would be great to be able to have the Garmin hibernate while not in use so that, when needed, the watch has a good battery level.



However, my main issues are about the poor craftsmanship of the watch.

- The heart rate strap stopped working a few month after the purchase. I got a new one and I am having issues with it. Some times, it works fine but more often than not, I get very low heart rates measurements, especially when the training intensity increases. I am now using the HR monitor less and less.

- The paint job on the watch has peeled in many places. The Garmin looks really ugly now and is no longer wearable anytime else than during a sport activity.

- The rubber watch band is just plain junk. Through wear, it is now severely peeled, has a bad cut in it (fortunately, it is still usable), and the band gives up when exposed to vibrations from some dirt road downhill rides in the mountain bike .



I still like my gadget a lot but I will likely not buy it again if it stops working. Maybe the 305 because it costs just half as much.

The Garmin 405 is really fantastic but Amazon delivered the wrong product. As you can read in the name of the product it should have included a heart monitor but it was not part of the product delivered. The same product without heart monitor costs 70 dollars less. The problem is that the product was exported to Chile. I tried to contact Amazon in order to get a reimbursement for the 70 dollars but I just couldn't find an option in their web page to request it.

This GPS is junk/garbage. It states that it is water resistant. Be sure you know water resistant means that you cannot place it on the bottom of a vehicle even though it states that in the guidebook.



We had it one day....Cleveland...snow. I put it on the bottom of the car (one of their "recommended" places in their guidebook). It got damp; didn't work; never was able to use it; light would not go green again on the tracking device. I called the company and they stated they would sell me a DISCOUNTED one to replace it. Funny thing...DISCOUNTED ONE was more than the original I purchased. Scam company!! There is NOT ONE WORD in the entire guidebook about water damage, not a single word! All it states is that it is water resistant. The CSR goes on to tell me that there was a SEPARATE yellow sheet explaining about water, nothing in the 12 page guidebook. I recommnended they put it on the page with all the recommended locations to place it and an asterisk, *If you place on your vehicle and water comes in contact, you will be purchasing a new one at our discounted price which is more than our retail price.

The LAS-1505 is excellent for price, I got one here for $100 (Feb2010).



As noted the unit lacks power on/off and the torx bit screws are a bit of a pain, BUT use a 1/4" wide x 1" strip of marking tape between the battery and terminal and you can have an "on switch" when you need it. By doing so, unit is always at the ready when I understand our teen driver is about to get the car for the evening!



So far no surprises, either in functioning of the LAS-1505 or in unexpected visits by the kid to unknown destinations.

I read about every GPS logger on Amazon and was hoping this was the right one.



Problems that caused me to return it:



-Despite some claims that the batteries lasts 3 weeks, mine lasted 2 days before the red battery light went on

-Very difficult to get a satellite lock, at least in NYC. I went on top of a building and was able to get a lock. After this, I walked several miles and downloaded the data. It jumped around way too much and was missing lots of data as well

-Device packaging is low quality. The screw holes are little wings of plastic that come somewhat broken. Not great considering you have to take the batteries out anytime you want to turn it off and the battery life is bad

-Software is for Windows only

-I called customer support and they weren't very helpful. Suggested pretty quickly that I might need to return the device to the seller if I'm not getting a sat lock.

This product does amazing things. I wasn't sure how well it would work but it does do what it claims and more. At first I only thought that it just gave a reveiw of where the car went. Then I started playing with the top icons. It really shows every thing. Where car went, how long it stopped, and the complete route the car took showing every street the car drives on. It is amazing.

First let me say that I have used all types of GPS units for almost 10 years, I currently own 3 LAS units including one of the Tracking Keys. I like the units, they work well, they track very well and allthough they are not "live" type units they work great as data loggers. My only grip is the bad software that comes with the units. It is hard to download the data, sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. I use the units on three different computers using Windows XP, but each time it takes numerous attempts to download the data. Once downloaded the tracking data is very good, very accurate. The problem with all three units (all different units) is the bad software! If the company would fix the software they would have a winning combination. Nothing more fustrating than trying over and over to download data.

I was very surprised by the build quality of this unit. Not very good at all. I bought this unit for my Dad for Christmas while I bought myself the Garmin. I suspect I may need to return this unit (If that's even possible) and get him something else. Seems so overly complicated while many other units seem so simple.



I was aware of the yearly subscription fee but have recently read that if you do not continue with the subscription, they wipe the maps from your unit. I probably should have read up on that before I purchased the unit. I would not have purchased it had I known.



The software is buggy on the unit while the desktop software, although not completely tested, seems to work other then the fact that my unit STILL says not registered to anyone even though I filled in the forms correctly and synced it.

I like the GPS, it works great. The only drawback is that it is pretty thick so that you really cant put it in your pocket and just pull it out when you are ready to hit. You have to either clip it on your belt (which impedes your swing) or leave it in the cart or with your caddy. If they could get the same technology onto a thin device, I think it would be much improved.

The Sky Caddie SG5 is a wonderful aid for any golfer who plays different courses. I tested it on my home course, where I don't really need it, and was pleased with the results. Having now played on about half a dozen "foreign" courses I know that I have saved 2-4 shots per round because I knew where hazards were and how far the green really was. I would not want to play an unknown course again without my Sky Caddie.

I had an SG3 that served me well for 2 years, but I wanted to upgrade to the color SG5. I have been using it now for about 4 months and really can't say anything bad about it. Lately the foursome I have been playing with 3 of us have a GPS unit and 1 has a Laser System. I'm the only one with a SkyCaddie, the other 2 GPS units are different brands but are new color models in the $300 to $400 range, and both have the touch screen features. I won't name those brands,since I don't own them, and to be honest I'm glad I don't own them. What we started to notice is that about 75% of the time the 3 GPS units all had different yardage, anywhere from 3 yards to up to a max of 14 yards. The one constant was that my buddy with the laser always had the same yardage as me with my SG5. What was also interesting is that when we all used our 3 different GPS units to mark the distane of one of our shots, we all got the same distance for the shot, no variance. The other 2 GPS units don't charge a yearly fee for their course database, I do pay an annual fee of $29.95 for all the courses in CA. The other 2 guys started to do some investigating why their units seemed to be inaccurate at times. The conclusion that we all reached is that SkyCaddie is the only manufacture that actually has people out there walking the courses and recording the data based on where they are standing in relationship to the GPS readings they get. Seems the other companies base their measurements on ariel data and mapping programs. Here is a quote from one of those manufacturers in their FAQ section regarding how they collect their data: "The (product name) golf course data is collected from aerial and satellite imagery from various vendors. We then use that imagery to digitize the course feature. Once complete, course routing and scorecard information is assigned for each hole". Also if you read the fine print that free course data without a fee could someday have a fee, "At the current time, we are offering map updates to include new and updated courses at no charge. At some point in the future, it is possible that (company name)will begin to charge a nominal fee for course updates". Again they aren't saying you will defiantly be paying a fee someday, just that it is possible. Probably the lawyers had them throw that in just to cover their butts, so its probably not a concern. Last Saturday the other 2 guys both showed up with a new SG5 (bought on Amazon), their other units are now listed on Ebay. And we all have the same yardage now all the time. Our buddy with the laser gets his measurement to the pin and it takes in account the slope, nice if you can see the pin. Also my hands shake too much when using the laser. The SG5 won't improve your game if you don't have consistent distances nailed down with your clubs, but if you do you will see more balls on the green, not short or off the green.



One other thing is all these guys that complain about how the SG5 won't load up on their computer or freeze up and have too be returned. I don't pay attention to those reviews, some of these folks have messed up or old systems or aren't computer literate to follow directions. And yes calling SkyCaddie support is not a pleasant experience, if you do more talking then listening. I have found that if I email in my question support gives me a detailed and accurate answer within anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple hours.



My experience and that of my friends is that free course data may not be as accurate as the information from SkyCaddie, it's worth $29 a year to get accuracy.

I own a first generation SkyCaddie. The device works OK but does not do all of the things that they advertised. On a couple of occasions I have called the help line to ask a question. All I ever got was a voice message telling me that they will call me back. Never once did they return my call. I sent emails but those were never answered either.



My membership ends in December, and I debated about renewing my subscription. Eventually, I renewed in March. They collected full payment then re-started my membership as of December instead of March, thereby cheating me out of three months of use. They did not respond to my emails or to my phone calls.



I cannot recommend SkyCaddie at all. Customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. They are not interested in satisfied customers. They are only interested in selling GPS units. I suggest you try one of the other golf GPS providers and forget about SkyCaddie.

If you need to get a new or replacement GPS and your a dog hunter you have to really look at these. You can buy the handheld unit without the collar and at the worst you can use it as a regular GPS. We used these last bear season and there great. You just have to keep in mind the range, add on antenna a good option.

Probably one of the best hunting toys I've had ever. I used the Astro 220 on my old deer hound. I could see the direction she was heading and was able to pick her up a couple of miles away crossing the road. This happened several times and considering the time and worry I saved was grateful to have purchased it. I made maps of the hunting area with the GPS and downloaded where the dog traveled that day. The main downside is after turning the dog loose you are locked into retrieving the dog within 17hrs. Using this collar in conjunction with another collar with longer distance and longer battery life may be the way to go. The information gained from using the astro 220 is well worth the trouble.

This is the best thing available as far as I know, but it could be a little better. I refused to buy until they came out with the DC30 collar. Topo map software is a must-have. I wish they had the option for a shorter collar strap (beagles). As one other reviewer said, making this an all-in-one shock and track would be the bomb. Part of the appeal of this system is that I can tell when a dog is running off-game (deer) by the path they are taking (rabbits make circles, loops, etc.), so I can correct them before they get too far away and get in the highway. I keep one DC30 on an old dog I trust and the other one on younger dogs in training. When I see them separate, there is a good chance the puppy is going astray. I need the tracking collars on the dogs that also wear e-collars. It's quite a lot for a 20lb beagle to carry. I'll be upgrading to the lighter Tritronics G3 series as soon as I can afford it.

After using this for the first time last weekend it was quite impressed how well it works. I've used telemetry collars in the past, but pin pointing the signal was troublesome at best. Additionally, if you were pointed 180 degrees in the opposite direction you would get a signal. A real problem when you looking for your dog in a dense forest and you start walking in the wrong direction. I got that one back by repeatedly using a whistle and he finally heard me.



For quail hunting in scrub oaks it works wonderfully. Often I would loose track of a dog and they were on point just 15 yards away. I have not been able to run more than one dog at a time because it took too much concentration and I was out there to enjoy the time with my dogs, and not stress out over where they were. I also am not a big fan of bells and beeper collars. They get annoying to listen to them all day. Even using the locate feature on a DT collar wasn't that reliable as the range was not as advertized. The Tritronics beeper collar was also horrible, as my dog would shut it off grouse hunting moving in and out of thick cover.



Next fall I will see how well they work in dense cover.

With its 32-channel STMicroelectronics Cartesio chipset and DeLorme ConstantLock technology, the PN-40 acquires satellite signals quickly and retains them in the most challenging GPS environments. Map and imagery displays are lightning-quick thanks to a powerful dual-core processor.

 "GREAT UNIT for GEOCACHING, Compass was iffy!" 2010-03-03

Just some background I had ordered the PN-40 to try it out since I was not impressed with my Garmin Dakota 20 I had just purchased. I have a review of that unit Garmin Dakota 20 2.6-Inch Touchscreen Handheld GPS Navigator there if you would like to see what I thought of that.



Pros of PN-40

1. The Screen - Even though it is small for the size of the unit and smaller than the Dakota 20 even this screen is great. It really is easy to read in sunlight. I found the more sun you had the easier it was to see. That is the translucent or transductive or some kind of technology it says. lol. But it works great. The screen being small the maps still looked like they were in HD compared to the Dakota 20 and my friends Oregon 300.

2. Construction - This thing just feels rugged. It looks totally water tight. From the screw down battery cover (no screwdriver needed)to the brass contacts used for USB (there is no USB plug it is a true CONTACT connection which adds to the water tightness)

3 Features - This interface is very simple. It is not as snazzy as some GPS I have seen but it does the job. You can route to Geocache via street turn by turn and then switch to hiking directions when you get out of the car. The paperless geocaching is excellent as well. It came with USA Topo maps and Street maps as well as street maps for Mexico and Canada as well. The other maps are available for $29 a year. Very nice compared go Garmin's per map price. I was also surprised this unit came with a 4 gig mem chip extra in the box. I had not expected that. Honestly I do not travel enough to require a larger chip for maps but it does support up to 32 gig.



Cons of PN-40

1. Battery life - This unit is only rated at 14 hours so I expect about 10 to 12 with good NiCad rechargeable. I will see though. So far I have only pushed it to 10 hours. The new Garmin lines (Dakota and Oregon) get 16 to 20 hours.

2. Compass - The unit has a 3 axis compass. The compass is electronic when you are standing still and it is GPS based when you move. I have not had any luck at all with the compass when I am standing still and the electronic compass takes over. It seems like a paper clip would throw it out of whack even. In my car the metal really did a number on the compass, but only when I was not moving. When moving it is very accurate.

3. Keys - I will admit having back lit or lighted keys would be nice. I will get used to button placement soon and will be able to do everything blindfolded but I have fumbled the past few nights looking for some caches.



Overall I am very happy with the unit. I sent the Garmin Dakota 20 back. It was only $20 more than the PN-40 so price was not a deciding factor. I found this unit was just way simpler without a touch screen and the fact the Garmins come with no maps at all gave this one an edge.

I bought this because of all the good reviews I saw. I guess if you want something that is close to accurate, doesn't pick up all that good and is hard to ues it is a good choice.

My nuvi 550 GPS picks up signal faster and is more accurate than this. The maping software is very deep but very hard to use.

I bought the DeLorme hoping to use it on hiking trails. I'm a day hiker. I wanted to turn it on at the start of a hike, have it identify where I was and show me what trails/roads were available from that spot. I wanted a "safety net" in case I got turned around on hikes. That ease of use is what I had come to expect from a GPS, because I use a Garmin unit in my automobile and frequently take it with me when I travel, domestically and overseas. For the record, I bought this unit because of the detailed maps, which are clearly superior to what I saw on the Garmin "hiking" units.



It comes with TopoUSa maps, so you have to load them on your computer, you have to learn that software, you have to download the maps for particular areas you plan to travel, you have to figure out how to tell it you're hiking (not driving, boating, etc.) There is no default to limit the device to hiking trails.



The instructions are not adequate for the complexity of the device, and I have not been able to find additional, detailed instructions on line.



Perhaps if this weren't my first "hiking" GPS I would be more forgiving, but it's complexity makes it essentially useless for a day hiker.

The screen is a good enough size to be read. The gps unit is fairly accurate and stays within its stated accuracy. The Delorme Topo USA software and Topo Maps of all the U.S. are a great value. This is included with a gps unit that is just as good as the garmin, and better than the magellan ones. With Delorme adding maps all the time to its map library its becoming more usable by international travelers and those who live in other countries. Look for high resolution aerial imagery in May of this year (2010)
