 "Terrible - Never locks on a signal" 2010-02-01

Gets you where you want to go.....only AFTER it takes 10-15 minutes to acquire a signal. The thing spins and spins and spins and says "acquiring signal" for about 10 minutes each time you want to use it. I have not gotten into the habit of taking it into my house, punching in all the info and then letting it acquire a signal for the 10-15 minutes before I leave the house. Then by the time I am ready to leave, it works. Buy something else.

I purchased this unit approximately 9 months ago and have not been pleased with its performance. More specifically...



(1) Unit is prone to locking up, requires frequent resetting. This is particularly problematic in the middle of a trip.



(2) Trip routing is ok, but you need to review them ahead of time to make sure you know the route. This is because the unit regularly instructs me to exit the highway, inappropriately. For highway exits where there is a parallel access road, the unit will instruct me to get off on the exit then re-enter the highway. On a recent trip on the Capital Beltway near DC this occurred at almost every exit.



(3) Battery life is poor. I realize the large screen and frequent dialogue will put a drain on the battery, but it will only operate for an hour or so without being plugged in.



(4) Slower to synch up with the satellite. My previous Magellan Roadmate was much quicker.



(5) The blue tooth option isn't useful for more than a couple second conversation (although, I think this is not much different that other models, our Garmin is not either).



Finally, the unit recently stopped powering up and I need to send it back for repair/replacement.



There are legitimate benefits to this unit, including a good display and I love the AAA database.



I wanted to like this unit and specifically sought out a Magellan brand product based on my satisfaction with my previous unit. However, I am very hesitant to recommend this model.

well..this is the 2nd Magellean Maistro I have purchased. This one is OK, but lacks the sound indication like the 4250 that lets you know are 'exactly' where you need to turn. The little "be-beep' sound. It tells you you have say 1/4 mile before left turn onto 'x' street exit and stay left but when at the exact spot to turn, does not sound the chime to let you know THAT is where the turn is..right now!

I much prefer the 4250 feature for that chime but other than that and the occasional wrong turn on the map (other one did the same thing) it works great. No worries with the wrong turn...it resets itself to reroute instantly so wasn't a big deal.

I would definately recommend both the 4250 and 4350 to anyone. Great product for the price!

 "Terrible Quality Control" 2009-12-03

Since I received the initial Maestro 4350 a little over six months ago, three of them have failed in quick succession.



After three months, the first simply stopped updating the car's location in the middle of navigating to an unfamiliar location (that was not a lot of fun, when after 20 minutes, I finally realized that we were nowhere near the location on the screen), and it stopped responding to screen taps. When reset, it lost all the information I'd entered, all previous destinations, home location, everything. It worked for a while and then locked up again. It always had trouble holding a blue tooth connection on the few occasions when it actually made the connection.



The second unit lasted less than a week. It locked up and reported that it couldn't load a specific file. It then stopped responding to screen taps and had to be reset (but without losing the home location this time).



The third one arrived a couple of days ago, and despite being charged almost the entire time since it arrived, either through the 110V adapter or through the car adapter, it reports "Battery level low" every time it is disconnected from its charger.



Note that in each case, tech support confirmed that the unit had the latest version of the software.



Each return has taken over an hour on the phone to arrange. Magellan requires the defective unit be delivered to a full service FedEx office, not just a local drop box or shipper; Magellan won't arrange for a pickup. They managed to set up the latest two returns incorrectly, so I've had to drive to FedEx repeatedly.



You'd think that if Magellan's quality control were any good, this situation could simply not occur.



I've purchased several different Magellan GPS units over the last several years for myself and my family -- I like their features -- but my latest GPS purchase was a TomTom. We'll see...

I used to have the Magellan Maestro 4040 (S/N: 0726401640231) that I bought from Costco in 2006 and sadly it was stolen from a car break-in.



Magellan 4350 is a great improvement for me and worth the money in compare to its competitors.



Improvement features that impressed me:

1. High-sensitivity GPS street level tracking

2. Quick re-route after missing a turn

3. FM transmitter to play MP3 on my car-radio.

4. Almost accurate Estimate Time of Arrival (ETA)

5. Able to continue GPS navigation from Car-travel to OnFoot-travel

6. Comes with wall-charger to charge the GPS unit in hotel room for next day OnFoot-travel navigation while visiting new cities.



Wish-list feature on this product:

1. Live time traffic.

2. Able to upload street maps for Asia countries for travelling.

 "Product Condition Affects Use" 2010-01-02

I had used this model in the past, and so expected the same difficulties in the "ease of use" category. While the lack of maps and directions in certain instances is still annoying, the main issue I have with this product is the like-new-to-good rating of the refurbishment. The screen has not minor blemishes, but large dark blotches on it that actually make it difficult to see the display at any time during the day. Nighttime is OK, because the spots are dark -- you can still see them, so they're a cosmetic blemish, but they don't interfere with use of the product. But during the day, it becomes very difficult to use because of the poor condition of the screen. I was very disappointed the first time I turned it on, and remain so. I won't make the attempt to save money by buying a refurbished product again.

I buy a lot of refurbished products - everything from desktop computers and laptops to mp3 players. I only rarely have an issue with a refurbished unit. When I do, customer service usually does everything they can to help. In this case, they were very slow and used their refurbished unit to get more money out of my Mother, the person I gave this GPS to. She has had a Magellan GPS for the last 6 years and wanted another, so I didn't get her a Garmin like mine.



When I received the unit, I opened it up to do a little setup so Mom wouldn't have to. It turned on but wouldn't load up. The flash was completely corrupt and wouldn't even start loading. Since it was already 12/9 when I received the unit, I immediately called customer service to get it fixed. They opened a case and asked for a receipt. I emailed my Amazon receipt while on the phone with the customer service rep. He told me I'd have someone get back to me within 24-48 hours after receipt verification to get something done. I got no call - I had to call back and they still hadn't verified my receipt. They said they never received it but somehow found it while I was on the phone. They transferred me to someone else to get the return authorization done. At first they wanted me to pay for the shipping back, but I convinced them that since it was DOA, I shouldn't have to pay. They sent me a prepaid label and it was shipped back. I received the unit on 12/23.



When I got it back, I checked it out and it turned on, etc. I wrapped it up for Mom and she loved it on Christmas morning! Then, she tried to put in my address to see the route it would take. My house and my street did not exist. I've lived here for almost 4.5 years. Mom called customer support to ask about it. They kept her on the phone for more than an hour and a half while they gave her the runaround and said some pretty stupid things - like if I had asked for the same unit with the same features when I sent it back to be fixed. When she asked about getting the maps upgraded (BTW, Garmin always lets you update your maps to the latest when you register your unit), she was told that she couldn't do it online and would have to pay $10 to have a CD shipped to her. The funny part was that $10 was all S&H - they told her the update was free. After all the arguing, she just paid it.



Mom is completely disillusioned with Magellan. Although this model had lots of features she wanted, she'll never buy another Magellan again (and you can be sure I won't be buying any either).

This product lasted 6 months before becoming "frozen". It is out of warranty so I'm s.o.l.. While it worked it was difficult to use compared to my previous GPS a Lowrence IWay. I know this is not much of a review but I just wanted to provide a little warning to others shopping for a GPS.

This was a gift for my daughter. No more dangerously clutching Map Quest directions as she drives, no more getting lost!



I got to see the exact same model in action in a friend's car. That and my friend's recommendation and suggestions were probably more advantageous than checking Consumer Reports or other reviews.



A chuckle for you: My daughter drove a very elderly man to a football game, using the Magellen GPS. After a while, he remarked, "Damn! I wouldn't want a job like that, giving directions all day long! Boring!"

I just switched from Garmin because my Garmin 1490T would reboot constantly, stutter badly when speaking and the keyboard was slow and unresponsive. That said the Garmin is light years ahead of this unit in terms of features. For example on the Garmin I can choose a 3D map that stays on all the time, choose a different voice / language, a different vehicle icon and the list goes on and on. It's very customizable whereas this unit is not. I personally like Garmin better for many many reason but since their quality control seems to have slipped with their software I was forced to look for an alternative.



This unit has some nice features NOT found on the Garmin such as voice recognition however it will not accept a destination via voice by address. Magellan does NOT provide a free map upgrade and the unit I got came with the 2008 maps. Garmin allows 1 free map update so that you can get the latest maps. The mounting cradle is not as sturdy on this unit and it seems to flex and move around if you're trying to use the keyboard while it's stuck to the windshield. I have no idea why but this unit insists on having you input the city for every destination rather than using your current position. Garmin on the other hand assumes that you are looking for a destination in the current city unless you change it first which is an option but not required for each address entry.



My opinion, when Garmin gets their software sorted out I'm switching back. Until then I'll use Magellan.

Well... I bought this GPS, after owning a Garmin Nuvi 205. It looked nice, and had some pretty nice features compared to the Nuvi 205. ... Well! When I first got it, it was a complete piece of crap. Every 5 miles it would restart itself to "increase performance" - something that apparently never worked. After Magellan released a firmware update, it fixed that. But this unit has no idea where it is! Whenever I drive by a street and look at the map, the annoying blue triangle is still, in many cases, not yet even to the street I just passed! I've learned to use my imagination to picture a red triangle ahead of Magellan's deficient blue one, as my real position. No other GPS I have ever used has had that problem! It is ridiculous for a GPS this new. Anyway... a lot of the features are cool... but this GPS is just "okay". I would not buy it (unless they fix the pinpointing issue). Oh well... I'll go back to overpriced Garmin or something.

This is the third GPS I've owned the first two being two iterations of an Alpine blackbird. Coming from the blackbird, the 4700 is nearly a perfect match for the feature set with the added bonus of (hopefully) regular map updates and more reliable hardware.



The rich featureset in this device is outstanding, I love the AAA tourbook. Before buying anything I went to the stores and spent a considerable amount of time trying out different interfaces and the Magellan is far superior in every aspect, I found myself quickly frustrated with the Garmin and TomTom interfaces. Magellan is spot on with a clear, easy to use, intuitive interface. My main complaint coming from the blackbird is the fact that this unit is entirely touch screen based, and while a touch screen is great somethings are just more easily accomplished using hard external buttons. Adjusting the volume while driving requires you to take your eyes off the road instead of just feeling for an external volume button, the same applies to zooming in and out.



The voice command definitely sucks, I can get a few of them to work reliably but things like ATM location and where am I don't work at all. I'm sure it's just subject to the usual voice command problems of different accents and different pronunciations just like those wonderful voice prompt phone systems that leave you frustrated and wanting to throw your phone at the nearest brick wall.



Directions seem pretty spot on atleast for the areas I've been in so far. In my experience with these devices is that they are a driving aid and generally get you to the general area you are trying to get to but are subject to the limitations and failures of the mapdata (navteq) which is subject to the limitations and failures of the people out in the field recording the map data. So if you get to your destination and it's on the wrong side of the street or a block off on the numbering it's not necessarily the GPS it's the maps, also keep in mind that streets, routes, and exits change sometimes quicker than the map makers can update them.



Software update, software update, software update. Mine came with v 1.27 and my initial impression out of the box was disappointment but once I updated to the latest (2.07) it was almost like a whole different device. The software update is free, just register on magellan's website.



AAA - AAA is the best thing in the world, and if you are a member you can register your device with magellan/AAA and get a free one year extension on the warranty so if you buy this at a regular store don't get scammed into buying their extended warranty and you will get one free from AAA. If I didn't mention this before the AAA data is great and is something i've wanted integrated into a GPS for quite a few years now, kudos to magellan an AAA for parternering and making such a wonderful device feature. IMO, this feature alone puts Magellan above and beyond any other GPS.

Let me begin by saying Magellan makes a good product. But they are not being honest with us buyers. The maps on this are from Spring 2008 it is now almost 2010 you might get a good deal on this GPS but plan on paying 79 dollars to update the maps. I think its dishonest of Magellan putting almost two yearold maps and waiting until many purchasers have the product before releasing new map updates then charging us for them. Deal with them at your own risk. This is no reflection of Amazon (they are the best) only the Magellan management team.
