"terrible product - don't buy Tom Tom" 2010-01-19
By Suffered Enough
I have been frustrated using this GPS due to it's cumbersome menu search. It did not come with a user manual nor a CD instructional. Upon calling the company I was told that the product was rushed and if I wanted I could visit their web site to download the materials. Downloading failed. Updates are impossible to obtain. Tom Tom fails to recognize remote areas (that's where you need this thing to work). The unit even fails to recognize the street I live on. Stay away from this product.

"Won't mount in my car/Fast Friendly Service Company anything but" 2010-01-13
By Aaa Visa Gift Card
The TomTom company seems OK, but sometimes their satellite system doesn't work. However, its better than my phone GPS.

The windshield of my car is not vertical. It sweeps back at a very odd angle. Look up Photos of the Honda Fit so You can see the problem I am having. The strange angle also makes the lower portion of the windshield at arm's length from the driver.

I am currently trying to find a way to mount it in my car, because its good enough to keep if it would only mount to the dashboard.

The Fast Friendly Service Company charges a 15% restocking fee, which is odd for an Amazon vendor, so be sure you really want something before you buy from them. A logic loop in the programming made it impossible to reach the seller to ask for permission to return it. After I put this fact in my feedback of them, they begged me to remove it because they are a small company and just trying to get ahead. I'd rather have an adapter to make it fit my car than return it. They haven't seemed to notice this because they were so horrified of my feedback that they forgot about everything else. They say they will make exceptions to the to the restocking policy. All you have to do is ask! Perhaps if enough people ask, they will give up this bit of harrassment on a regular basis. I found working with this company to find a way to mount the TomTom in my car tedious and tiring.

I'm currently working on my second attempt to try to find an adapter to make it fit a car witout a big lat spot on the dash and a windshield that is not vertical and far enough away that if I could mount it near the bottom of the windscreen, it would be hard to see. If that isn't possible, I will have to return it.

 "Map Updates" 2009-10-22
By A. Green (California, USA)
I bought my 130S about a month ago and have been using it almost daily since. Other than the once-in-a-while slightly strange routing it has performed very well. It always gets me where I want to go, even if the route is slightly different than I'd have picked on my own. The unit picks up satellites well, even in my house. I connect to TomTom Home once a week to update satellite positions, so it connects well.

The reason I'm writing is that when I got the unit my maps were 6 quarters old. I did the Tools > Use Latest Map Guarantee method to update my map and was told that my unit was not eligible for the updates. I checked this option each week and got the same message every time. Yesterday, after having the unit for more than a month, I tried again and was pleasantly surprised with a notice saying that updates were available. So, I downloaded the updates and now my maps are current. Anyone know what's up with that? I'm much more happy with my unit now that I know I have up-to-date maps.

The other thing I like about the unit is the option to mount it on my dashboard, rather than on the windshield. The legal windshield location in California is very inconvenient to use. I stuck the provided disk on the top of the dashboard in a convenient place and the unit is now easily accessable with no obstruction of my view of the road.

 "GREAT GPS" 2009-10-21
By K. Hummer (Smithville, Tn.)
I wanted a GPS but didn't want to spend a lot as I don't need it often. This GPS fits the bill. It is very easy to use and is very accurate. I'm very glad I chose this TomTom and I would recommend it to anyone who asks.

 "A best buy" 2009-10-20
By Mark A. Muenzmaier (Texarkana, AR USA)
I purchased this TomTom for my wife who was flying into New Jersey, renting a car, and driving into the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, then back to the airport. She has ner used a GPS before, but said she had no trouble figuring out how to put in her destinations. She stated that the turn by turn instructions with street names were clear and easy to understand.

Then I loaned the TomTom to my mother in law to help her find a wedding in Louisiana. She is not too tech savvy, but had no trouble whatsoever.

I have played with it driving through my hometown and noticed one or two streets incorrectly named, but no big deal. I did go to TomTom's website to see if I could snag a free map update as some reviewers state they were able to do, but with no luck. This refurb unit has maps "four quarters" old and TomTom wanted something like $79 for new ones. Heck, if I had that kind of change lying around I wouldn't have bought a refurbished unit in the first place!

So let me get to the point: For the money I can't imagine getting a nicer GPS, and one that tells you the street names too. So what if you can't upload new maps for free. How often do you need to go to some newly developed street anyway? Mainly you use a GPS to find somewhere in a city or state for which you are unfamiliar. Snatch up this TomTom before they sell out!

"The Razor is almost free. It's the blades that cost money" 2009-10-19
By Minnesota Jim (Oregon)
We just finished a trip to Glacier National Park, Whitefish and Columbia Falls, Montana. The Tom Tom performed very well and was especially helpful in getting us around inside the City of Spokane. GPS units are very helpful in getting you out of difficult spots. The major fault with all of the sales material on the Amazon site is that no where does it say that you will have to buy the map updates. And you will have to buy the back issues depending on when your unit went into service. This being the case, you would be better off paying more and buying a brand new unit. Customer service got my update price down to about $60, but that was the best they would do. Updates are about $40 a year. I am going to have to buy six quarters, or about sixty dollars.

Also true: I guess that you could buy the unit and never update the maps. We have a dozen old maps around our house and the information is mostly accurate. The Tom Tom might serve you very well if you never went anywhere where new streets go in.

"Wonderful item for the price...Amazing value" 2009-10-28
By M. Wyatt (Laramie, WY, USA)
Obviously this isn't the best GPS on the market. It is however the best GPS for the price. We were able to download current maps at no charge once making a TomTom account. The maps are FREE. People keep saying they aren't free, but they are! It is easy to use and is an absolutely amazing device. Can't beat the price.

 "ended up returning it" 2009-10-24
By S.W.
I purchased this GPS based on the fair rating and the price, even though I was quite skeptical after reading some of the reviews on this refurbished unit. It turns out that I did not get a unit that was not registered before (probably), which some people have said is the reason that cause some refurb units to not receive map updates even though officially the refurb units are not covered by the same warranty as new units, so therefore cannot receive new map updates. I updated the map with "corrections" posted by other users, which did not turn out to be a great idea, as a lot of the directions were misleading, i.e., one destination pointed me to the middle of a road and another took me around small back roads or non-existing roads in a more remote area. These were the downside to this refurbished unit, but I imagine if I had purchased a new unit, these problems would not have happened. I actually find the Tomtom to be very user friendly and the selection of voices were nice and human-like. I'm comparing it to the Garmin Nuvi 255 that I purchased after I returned this Tomtom whose English voice selection is limited and sounds computer-like, but that's another story. Hope this helps someone deciding to purchase this Tomtom.

"TomTom ONE 130 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished" 2009-10-23
By J. Poehner (Michigan)
This is a great low end GPS. It does not say street names but does gives you a heads up when its time to turn (street names are on the map) I tested it by going my usual routes around town and it seems to work OK. It does tell me to take longer routes sometimes but there is a feature you can "modify" your routes. I used this Tom Tom to go to Iowa last week and it did have me take some pretty obscure gravel country roads but it did get me to my destination. (well, 1 house away!)
