I have used the 205 for 2 and half years and am on the third one. Garmin replaced the first one free after 14 months but the next time (15 months later) I had to pay $69.



I use the 205 as a speedometer and wear a Forerunner 305. Over a 30 mile ride the difference between the two is about .23 miles with the 205 registering more. The 205 is also more generous in computing average speed.



I haven't had any issues with the batteries but then I only ride for 90 minutes per day and then put it back on the charger.



The altitude is definitely wrong. I live in Florida and the highest point I ride up is a bridge that may be 20 feet in change. At the end of the ride it shows an elevation change of 50-70 feet up and down with a net change of 3 feet.

Once you own a Garmin 205, you'll get rid of the rest of your bike odometers. Buy the extra mounts for your other bikes. No need for wires, magnets, batteries, etc... For a short term use, it even works pretty well in a shir or bike bag pocket.



The only weakness is the battery life. It can only go about 8 hours between recharges. It does recharge pretty quickly, however, it does need AC. I tried a external battery recharger but it sucked 2 AA batteries dry without getting a full recharge.



It does recharge from a PC USB port as well as AC, so it is convenient to recharge at home, but not so good for tours and multi-day trips.



I have had mine for over 2 years now and it has functioned almost flawlessly.



The Garmin Training Center software for uploading and reviewing the rides is kinda basic especially for maps. However, it does provide exports to a number of other websites for conversions and mapping. You can export to Google and see your ride in the satelite view. Nice for planning future route extensions.



It can provide some limited course routing as well. The return home feature works nicely for going back along the route you went out on. You can also load a follow a predefined course. The display is pretty basic for these features, but they do work.

At least one dishonest Amazon vendor (Buy Accessories) is selling overhauled/refurbished units as new. Play it safe and only buy from Amazon itself.



Other than that, it looks great; have not used it yet. Buy a USB emergency battery charger for longer trips. APC has several good ones:

I have resisted upgrading from the basic county map to using any sort of GPS navigator for quite awhile. After all, my map only cost me around $20 and it's fairly easy to use. However, I received the Garmin 205 as a gift and decided to give it a try- and now am wondering what took me so long to do so! The GPS navigator is easy to use, even for someone completely new to them. The controls are easily understandable and the navigator gives clear direction as to upcoming turns. For the most part, it recalculates routes quite well although I have confused it on at least one occasion. I have used the search function quite a bit and as long as I narrow the category down, it's fairly quick. However, without doing that, the search takes long enough that it's fairly useless to me. Overall, the Garmin nuvi 205 is a good basic GPS navigation system without any fancy bells and whistles.

I spent a week reviewing various GPS options and talking to friends who own GPS units. I finally decided that for my purposes and budget, this should be good enough. If you want something to get you from point A to point B anywhere in the US, this is the one for you. It works great. I've used it on multiple trips where I had no clue about the roads I was taking. In terms of maps, points of interest and routing, this unit works perfectly! Just remember to update it once you buy it within 60 days. I haven't printed out directions to anything since I've bought this. Talk about saving paper! Another nice feature is the 'Pedestrian' mode that we used extensively to roam around in new cities and towns we visit.



I couldn't find this information anywhere, what's in the box? Car charger, Car mount and GPS unit. As a side note, if you have a Canon digital camera, the USB connector cable is the same, so no need to buy an extra one.



The only issue is that sometimes its unable to pinpoint the cars' position very accurately, which may lead to wrong turns. It happened twice so far (out of multiple trips in 3 months). It sent us south on a country road intersection when we should've taken north. This happened to us in a recent trip to Boston. But in the end it gets you to your destination albeit a few minutes late.



Overall, its a great unit for the price. It serves its purpose and it has a few nice extras. A basic unit that WILL get you to your destination.

I have no sense of direction and get lost easily in my own city. I presently use my Verizon Mobile's Navigator and have been trying to replace it so I won't have to spend monthly or daily usage charges. The Garmin 205 kept re-routing us off the the main highway onto some out-of-the-way, creepy-looking side roads at night while driving through Tennessee. We didn't get too far before we turned back around and got back on the highway. Traveling back through Tennessee, the Garmin 205 again directed us off the highway, which we ignored; but then it lost the satellite for what seemed like forever. Good thing we knew how to get back. It again lost the satellite in Indiana the next day. It is too unreliable for me to use while traveling by myself.





On the positive side, when it worked it worked VERY well. We were able to find our destination to some out-of-the-way places in rural Alabama with no problems whatsoever.

Every time I go from battery power to plug in, it automatically turns off and reboots. For those of you who have gps devices, you know how long that takes. Second, when I want to intentionally turn it off, it won't. And sometimes I wonder how it determines which routes to take especially through Chicago. Instead of taking the bypass, it always wants to take me through downtown (big mistake). While its better than nothing, it definitely could be better.
