Our old and trusty Magellan GPS had served us well, but its age was certainly showing. Not having it on hand on a recent trip, I borrowed a Garmin eTrex Vista from a friend. His unit convinced me it was time to get a Garmin eTrex. I settled for the eTrexHC mainly because of the price. Now that I have used it for site visits and on trips, it clearly is a good investment since its price and performance are very hard to beat. I was able to get maps from OSM that are really very helpful and updated. If there is only one thing that would make it better, it would be having a slot for a microSD so I don't have to keep loading and unloading maps--though I don't have to do this that often. The microSD card slot feature is available in a higher priced sibling of the eTrex HC. If you want the added convenience of storing a good number of maps and topos, get the one with the microSD slot.

I guess I got a lemon. Along with sever thousand others on the internet.

Mine lasted about a year.

The unit begins to power on then fades out.

According to many sites this is a common problem and the only fix is to replace it.

Not a good response considering that there are professionals who depend on this for their lives.

I'll try another manufacturer.

I purchased this item not knowing I will not be able to upload Garmin Topo maps. Yes, this model does not come with SD memory slot therfore it is pretty locked. I also found outside buttons (controls) very cumbersome to use. It is so much less intuitive than a touch screen offred by other Garmin models. My advise is buy for the same money Nuvi 255W and you will be able to upload maps using memeory slot it comes with. If you have a bit more money purchase GARMIN COLORADO. And finnaly remember : electroinic devices may fail, so you would need to depend on map , compass and sun. I returned this item. Amazon did a fantastic job...

Overall a good unit for the price, BUT WITH A MAJOR FAULT, software updates are a major problem!!!



I will compare it to three other GPS's I own (Garmin 755T, Navigon 2100, Magellan 2200)



Best maps: #1 Garmin, #2 Tomtom, #3 Magellan, #4 Navigon (as of 12/26/2009)

Garmin maps are the most complete and up to date!

Tomtom maps have some strange bends in the roads and are not as up to date as Garmin's (my street is not on TomTom but is on garmin).



Best Display:

#1 Garmin, #2 Magellan, #3 Navigon, #4 TomTom is difficult to see in daylight - especially if wearing sunglasses.



Best routing: #1 Garmin, #2 Tomtom, #3 Magellan, #4 Navigon



Best features:



Text to speech: #1 Garmin, #2 Tomtom, #3 Navigon, #4 Magellan



Lane assist:

#1 Navigon by far has the most lane assist/Reality View locations of any other GPS (but discontinued in the U.S.)

#2 Garmin - disappointing lane assist - "Reality View" almost non-existant!

#3 TomTom - even more disappointing - few lane assist locations and I haven't seen a "reality view" yet!



Speed Limit Display:

#1 Navigon - accurate and a user can set over the speed limit voice warning.

#2 Garmin - most accurate, even on secondary roads, BUT, no warning is available

#3 TomTom - Least accurate - speed limit completely wrong in several areas (not related to construction) can configure for warning sound when over the limit.



Summary.



TomTom's problem with map updates and software updates is unacceptable! I luckily performed a back-up before the first map update. The latest TomTom home supposedly fixed the lack of memory problem by warning you that space has to be freed up before a map update can be installed and give you a selection of items that can be deleted. In my case I would have to delete "all" text to speech computer voices to fit the map. Text to speech is one of my favorite features. I deleted all voices and began the map update - when the download was complete the update failed!!! The unit would not reboot. I did not turn it off. Before I lost the USB connection, I formatted the memory and installed the back-up. Tried the update again and again it failed!!! I reformatted again and this time I copied only the software files (did not re-install the back-up). Tried the update one more time and it finally worked. A few weeks later a new software update was available (not a map update). I took a chance and downloaded the update and the new update failed to install again (AND LOCKED UP THE UNIT)!!! After a few more hours I finally got the new update loaded. I WILL NEVER LOAD ANOTHER UPDATE TO THIS UNIT!!!



I will stay with Garmin in the future!

This GPS unit was a replacement for a One 3rd Addition that was stolen out of my car. The 340 S is a great unit however there are a few things that kept me from giving this unit a 5 star rating. The initial setup can be a bit cumbersome for the novice. Prepare to have your patience tested when connecting the unit to your computer for the first time. The newest map download is large and takes quite a while to download and even longer to install into the unit. I highly recommend going through the unit first and deleting voices that you will not be using to free up space otherwise the new map installation will fail due to the limited 2gb memory. TomTom should have put at the very least 4gb memory into this unit. If I didn't think that it would completely ruin the unit I would take it apart and install a larger sd memory card myself but it looks as though the unit is actually glued together to prevent doing just that.



The spoken street names function only works with the computer generated voices and so far it has worked flawlessly. I love the new lane guidance feature. When approaching interstate junctions and such it will show you the lane that you should be in and this feature is very acurate. All other features are classic TomTom and work very well. POI's are more than plentiful and specific POI's can be downloaded and installed for free through the TomTom Home software provided. The Easyport mount works very well and holds the unit firmly to the windshield. The audio is sufficient and is easy to hear even in our large van. The 4.3" screen is nice but the on screen keyboard is still a bit small for fat fingers like mine. I have resorted to using a pencil eraser to input addresses.



Overall I am happy with the XL 340 S and expect many years of good service out of it. One last note. I have called TomTom support on a couple of occasions and they have been very helpful contrary to what some of the other reviewers have stated.

This was our first GPS purchase and we love it. Just after purchasing the 340 S we took a trip in which part of the interstate we normally travel was closed. It took a few minutes, but we were able to skip parts of the calculated route where the interstate was closed. We were able to save about 2 hours using Tomtom versus the way we had planned to go on the map. It was a super buy, especially as it continues to fall in price.

I just switched from Garmin because my Garmin 1490T would reboot constantly, stutter badly when speaking and the keyboard was slow and unresponsive. That said the Garmin is light years ahead of this unit in terms of features. For example on the Garmin I can choose a 3D map that stays on all the time, choose a different voice / language, a different vehicle icon and the list goes on and on. It's very customizable whereas this unit is not. I personally like Garmin better for many many reason but since their quality control seems to have slipped with their software I was forced to look for an alternative.



This unit has some nice features NOT found on the Garmin such as voice recognition however it will not accept a destination via voice by address. Magellan does NOT provide a free map upgrade and the unit I got came with the 2008 maps. Garmin allows 1 free map update so that you can get the latest maps. The mounting cradle is not as sturdy on this unit and it seems to flex and move around if you're trying to use the keyboard while it's stuck to the windshield. I have no idea why but this unit insists on having you input the city for every destination rather than using your current position. Garmin on the other hand assumes that you are looking for a destination in the current city unless you change it first which is an option but not required for each address entry.



My opinion, when Garmin gets their software sorted out I'm switching back. Until then I'll use Magellan.

Well... I bought this GPS, after owning a Garmin Nuvi 205. It looked nice, and had some pretty nice features compared to the Nuvi 205. ... Well! When I first got it, it was a complete piece of crap. Every 5 miles it would restart itself to "increase performance" - something that apparently never worked. After Magellan released a firmware update, it fixed that. But this unit has no idea where it is! Whenever I drive by a street and look at the map, the annoying blue triangle is still, in many cases, not yet even to the street I just passed! I've learned to use my imagination to picture a red triangle ahead of Magellan's deficient blue one, as my real position. No other GPS I have ever used has had that problem! It is ridiculous for a GPS this new. Anyway... a lot of the features are cool... but this GPS is just "okay". I would not buy it (unless they fix the pinpointing issue). Oh well... I'll go back to overpriced Garmin or something.

This is the third GPS I've owned the first two being two iterations of an Alpine blackbird. Coming from the blackbird, the 4700 is nearly a perfect match for the feature set with the added bonus of (hopefully) regular map updates and more reliable hardware.



The rich featureset in this device is outstanding, I love the AAA tourbook. Before buying anything I went to the stores and spent a considerable amount of time trying out different interfaces and the Magellan is far superior in every aspect, I found myself quickly frustrated with the Garmin and TomTom interfaces. Magellan is spot on with a clear, easy to use, intuitive interface. My main complaint coming from the blackbird is the fact that this unit is entirely touch screen based, and while a touch screen is great somethings are just more easily accomplished using hard external buttons. Adjusting the volume while driving requires you to take your eyes off the road instead of just feeling for an external volume button, the same applies to zooming in and out.



The voice command definitely sucks, I can get a few of them to work reliably but things like ATM location and where am I don't work at all. I'm sure it's just subject to the usual voice command problems of different accents and different pronunciations just like those wonderful voice prompt phone systems that leave you frustrated and wanting to throw your phone at the nearest brick wall.



Directions seem pretty spot on atleast for the areas I've been in so far. In my experience with these devices is that they are a driving aid and generally get you to the general area you are trying to get to but are subject to the limitations and failures of the mapdata (navteq) which is subject to the limitations and failures of the people out in the field recording the map data. So if you get to your destination and it's on the wrong side of the street or a block off on the numbering it's not necessarily the GPS it's the maps, also keep in mind that streets, routes, and exits change sometimes quicker than the map makers can update them.



Software update, software update, software update. Mine came with v 1.27 and my initial impression out of the box was disappointment but once I updated to the latest (2.07) it was almost like a whole different device. The software update is free, just register on magellan's website.



AAA - AAA is the best thing in the world, and if you are a member you can register your device with magellan/AAA and get a free one year extension on the warranty so if you buy this at a regular store don't get scammed into buying their extended warranty and you will get one free from AAA. If I didn't mention this before the AAA data is great and is something i've wanted integrated into a GPS for quite a few years now, kudos to magellan an AAA for parternering and making such a wonderful device feature. IMO, this feature alone puts Magellan above and beyond any other GPS.

Let me begin by saying Magellan makes a good product. But they are not being honest with us buyers. The maps on this are from Spring 2008 it is now almost 2010 you might get a good deal on this GPS but plan on paying 79 dollars to update the maps. I think its dishonest of Magellan putting almost two yearold maps and waiting until many purchasers have the product before releasing new map updates then charging us for them. Deal with them at your own risk. This is no reflection of Amazon (they are the best) only the Magellan management team.
