 "Great GPS for the right price" 2009-12-01

I'm quite pleased with this GPS. It's easy to use, accurate,compact, lightweight and has a very viewable screen. It can be viewed without the backlight sometimes and requires only a very low setting on the backlight when it is needed. The poor basemap is to be expected and I wanted a detailed topo anyway so got a Garmin topo map of the western coastal states.



The GPS comes with Mapsource software and the map comes with Basecamp. They perform similar functions but are different. Figuring them out will take some time to sort out. Garmin wasn't much help- said which one you use is user preference. Mapsource seems better at organizing tracks and routes, but Basecamp is much better for printing up maps.



I like having the altimeter, both for being able to more accurately measure my altitude (if I've been able to calibrate recently) and for being able to measure barometric pressure. The GPS altitude seems to be within about 30 feet and varies considerably (I live at about 1325 feet and have seen GPS altitude readings range from 1295 to 1345 feet. With the altimeter, it can detect if I've got the GPS on the floor or if I'm standing up with it. However you need to be able to calibrate it frequently at known altitudes to have reliable accuracy. If you don't want the altimeter, the Venture HC could be a good alternative.



Although I'm very satisfied with the Summit HC, unless I could get one at the price I got ($120), I think I'd go with the Vista HCX. Its superior battery life and extra memory capacity (once you buy a micro sd card) would be worth the small price differential that exists currently.

I purchased this for my sister to start Geocaching. It has the most needed basics: sensitive antenna, electronic compass, and lasts a long time on commonly available AA batteries. The internal memory has enough room for a large area of topo maps, but does not have expandable memory (the only downside with this wonderful GPSr).



All in all, an incredible bargain! It isn't a touch screen clone of an iPhone, but it gets the job done simply and reliably.

The HC is good for making your way through unfamiliar terrain. It's handy for marking hunting, fishing, and navigation points. Like other less expensive GPS units, the base map is very much lacking in detail. I feel that Garmin and other GPS manufacturers could provide a better base map. The owner's manual is sufficient and the unit's controls are well placed. A very serious navigator would probably be happier with a unit that has an SD slot for quickly adding more detailed maps. The 24mb internal memory of the HC isn't for the diehards. I enjoy my HC and feel it is the best under $200 pocket navigator out there for hunters,fishermen, and day hikers.

Granted, there are better units on the market with more features, but I wasn't looking for a $600 model that could do it all. I was looking for a basic GPS unit for a gift for my husband that we could use to start geocaching. I wasn't looking to invest $600 in a unit without even knowing if my husband would enjoy geocaching... but after finding out that he does, and using this unit for many excursions into random fields and wildlife areas- we are REALLY happy with the value for such a great unit! My father has used to for geneology, to mark coordinates of gravesites. We bought the maps so we can use it on the road, too. There isn't turn by turn navigation, but again, that's not why I bought this unit. If I had wanted that, I could have spent more for a different model. But, I also didn't want to spend a lot on a unit. This does everything we want/need it to do, and for the value it has some really cool functionality. It was easy to figure out how to download the cache data into the unit. We're very happy!

Being my first GPS, I expected a lot from this unit-fueled by all the rave reviews, no doubt. The satelite pickup seems O.K., but not "lightning fast". I bought the topo cd so I could download maps and was immiediately dissapointed in the limited memory of the unit. It would be nice not to have to download maps every time I go somewhere different.



It works O.K., but I don't find it very "intuitive", the buttons aren't labeled. I bought this because it got good reviews and was worried about getting something with a touch screen. I should have got the nuvie or the oregon. I bought it expecting 2009 technology- it isn't.

If you need a stand-alone GPS, this one is great. I've now used similarly specced TomToms and Magellans as well as an older Nuvi 350. This one's a great value, works as well as (and in some ways better than) the 350, and I found Garmin to be much more reliable and easy to follow than the other two manufacturers. That said, it seems as though the future of gps navigation is moving towards dashboard and phone integration, and I suspect we'll be seeing some substantial improvements in gps technology as those markets continue to grow.



If you can hold out till your next cell phone or car purchase, it's probably worth the wait. If you need a gps now I'd say get the best deal you can on a 2XX series garmin (like this one), but don't fret over the features - there's very little difference in functionality between the $600 units and those you can find for under $200. If you really want/need your GPS not to be an integrated unit, I'd say the 2XX are still a great deal across the board, but the traffic service may be worth a bit extra if you live somewhere that the FM traffic band is reliable - from my use I can say the traffic features don't help much if all your driving is around Philly, DC, NYC, or Baltimore.

I love this GPS! The traffic feature is really helpful in a busy metro area. There are ads but they are small and I don't really notice them. Garmin GPS's are very user friendly and this one is no different. It also displays the speed limit which is a nice added feature as well as the ability to enter coordinate for a location. Best GPS with traffic at this price!

 "a downgrade in many ways" 2010-01-31

In reading reviews, many folks seem to compare a gps device to having no gps at all. In that respect, practically all devices would deserve 4-5 stars. I received this device as a replace to my old, slow, and very large (but quite good) garmin streetpilot III. So here's my issues:

- It produces a route quickly but the algorithm places a heavy weight on large streets, so much that I sometimes get some awkward, unnecessary turns in my routes that cost me time.

- I find the traffic feature to be practically worthless. (This is not necessarily Garmin's 'fault' but perhaps the traffic reporting technology) Sometimes the device reports traffic delays and there is none. Othertimes, the device reports no traffic and there is a large jam. Regardless, I had to turn this feature off because it gave me routes around imaginary traffic.

- On the main map screen or the turn-by-turn screen, you can not see time to destination (only time to next turn and arrival time). You can get to the time to destination by clicking through a few screen but it's not convenient.

- arrival time is always too optimistic for street routes. the algorithm needs to factor in more time for stoplights.

- Previous text entries are not kept once you've completed a search. This is a big step backwards from my old streetpilot. Often times, I find that I need to return to the map for a minute or I need to update a search or I mistyped a name. Instead of being able to update a few characters, I have to start over - typing from scratch. It's just an unnecessary step backwards.

- Main map does not display adequate details. There are less streetnames and features displayed on the map as you're driving. Just a few streetnames show up, so you can't get a good enough sense as to what's around you.

- I'm not impressed with the 3-d mapping. I know a lot of devices tout this now but it's just not as helpful as 2-D. Yeah, it looks like a cool first-person video game, but you don't get as good a view of what's around you. It is pretty good for freeway off-ramps but that's it.



So, if you just want a gps and are not picky, this one will give you a route (as they ALL do) but it's certainly not a great gps.

This has some great features. The turn by turn direcions and traffic updater features are really cool. The base works better then older models. I have two complaintsl. 1.) It is WAY more delicate then older models. The slim profile and big touch screen look cool but mean the screen is easily broken. If you buy this, buy the service plan, keep the receipt, and buy a case for it. Do not keep it in the car or a briefcase. Mine broke very quickly. 2.) The web updater to update the maps is a memory hog that can only be used if you have a very new, top of the line computer. My old Mac can't handle it, nor can my new laptop.

This is a very nice GPS. It works well and is easy to use. I recommend it to anyone who asks me about GPS's.



Things you need to know:

1. This is a "wierd" model from Garmin. You won't find the 255WT on their website. The box is labeled 255WT, but it's marked 255W on the unit itself. It's basically a 255W with the traffic option built in.



It's very similar to the 265WT, but this model does not have Bluetooth.



2. If you buy from an auction site, Garmin will not warranty it. (It can be registered, though.)



3. You need to register it. The problem is, it does not come with a USB cable to connect it to your computer. The cable can be picked up any where like Best Buy, Radio Shack, possibly Wal-Mart, etc.



Once you've got the cable and the unit connected to your computer, go to my.garmin dot com. Once registered, click the My Dashboard tab, this will tell you what's available to update.



You only get one free map update.



To get your free update, you must download the update within 90 days of first use.



4. One of the biggest advantages of this unit vs. the 255W is the free lifetime traffic. A lot of GPS's offer traffic information, but charge quite a bit more for that option. This unit comes with FM Traffic Message Channel (TMC) which it uses to get information broadcast over FM radio frequencies.

Important things to know about the traffic feature on this GPS:



You must have the GPS connected to your car charger for it to receive the traffic information.



The power cord doubles as the traffic receiver. It would be nice to be able to see if there's any traffic on your route before leaving. While a bit annoying, at least it doesn't require an additional antenna. I have a Sony GPS that requires the power cord, plus an additional antenna to get traffic, so there's cords dangling all over the place.



You do not have to activate the traffic.



It's automatic. You'll know you're receiving traffic information if you see a little car icon in the upper left portion of the screen.



At times, my traffic icon is very slow to display...sometimes as much as 10-15 minutes. I live on the outer edge of the coverage for my area, so that may contribute to the slowness. What I've found is if I leave it plugged in to the car charger (and the charger also plugged in and receiving power), the traffic icon is always there.

There is MSN Direct traffic available for this unit as well. It costs extra, but has more features. But, according to their website, MSN Direct will cease operations on Jan 1, 2012.



5. Once registered you can go to Garmins website and download customizations like different vehicle icons, voices, etc. Most custom voices don't speak street names, though. They simply say, turn left in 200 feet.



You can also download a free program from Garmin that allows you to record your own voice.



Or, you can use a program to edit the Text to Speech (TTS) file in the unit. This allows you to keep the factory spoken street names but still change what the unit says. Simply "google" TTS voice editor, and you'll see the link to download the application.

6. You can create/download your own POI's. This allows you to create a list of custom business, etc, that you want to search on. An example would be BBQ restaurants, WalGreens, etc. There's a very nice site where people build these files and you can download for free:

You can also create your own POI's if you know the street address:

This is a very handy feature. The only thing I don't like about it is that the custom POI's are not "imbedded" into the factory POI's, so searching for them requires a few more "clicks", but no big deal.



7. The suction cup mount will not mount to textured dash boards unless you use the supplied mounting disc. But that disc has an adhesive backing and is near impossible to remove once you stick it to the dash. I bought a vent mount off eBay that works great, the GPS is still near eye level and is more out of sight from peering eyes.

 "Great gps, confusing manual." 2010-01-20

I brought this gps because many of my other gps's have outdated maps which can't update or have problems acquiring a satellite signal. This gps is excellent because maps are relatively recent and acquires a signal fairly quickly for a reasonable price. This gps doesn't have the bells and whistles of other gps with its elaborate features, but just enough to get you going.



One thing that I am annoyed about this gps is the confusing documentation. First of all, the gps doesn't say that it is an 255wt, but it is an 255w. The manual have references of an 205w but references many other models. In fact, the only thing that references this gps as an 255wt is the box itself. I am guessing that since Garmin sells so many different models, they have an one-size fits all mentality in their manuals. Another thing is that you have to connect your gps to your computer and register in order to able to get traffic updates.

I got this Tomtom 530s for Christmas, but I exchanged it. NOT because its a bad product, Its a great product.



The 5" screen on the 530s is great/ I don't know how anyone could use one of those crappy 3-3.5" GPS units. I have an old Tomtom 4.3", still works fine, but its nice to have a bigger screen and more updated features.



I returned the 530s and got the 540s for just a bit more. The units are the same except for two addition features. 1) Mexico maps - I have no plans to go to Mexico, definately not to drive. 2) Lane Guidance - great for LA freeways.



If you don't need Mexico map or Lane guidance(only needed for tricky highways), then get the 530s. THe money you save can go for a good case(highly recommended) and you'll get a fair amount of Megabytes free for new voices, other small maps, POI, etc.



530s and 540s are both great.

The 530 picks up satellites very quickly, especially if you download gps fixes. It's satellite sensitivity is also great. The iq routes are a godsend. The only bad thing is that it's sound quality of the computer voices is horrible. It also constantly mispronounces English street names. It also as a very big defect, it mispronounces the 0 (I.e. the 105 freeway) to "west". For example it will say merge left onto the one west five east freeway instead of one o five east or four hundred five east. You can see how this would be confusing.



Tom Tom senior tech support says this is a bug that affects all their models. They will not replaced the unit for this reason. They are working on the problem and are not able to give ANY estimate on when this will be resolved.



If you choose two voices, one computer voice and bart simpson for example. It will not speak any street signs in the computer voice. So you have to make a choice between text to speech and the celebrity voices. When you choose a non computer voice, it will also ask you to choose a computer voice. NO computer voice will be heard at this point.

The TomTom 530s is a deceptively dumb super high tech GPS. Once it sets a course its that way only no matter what, unless you force it to select an alternate route. So, if you are driving in dense traffic and notice a traffic standstill ahead and you turn off to take an alternate route, to get GPS help you have to tap the screen to get back to the main menu to select the alternate route and then confirm the alternate selection before it will display anything useful. I'm accustomed to the auto recalculation provided by Garmin and Magellan, so despite its 5" screen, the usefulness of the technology is inconvenient in circumstances where you least want to pay attention to programming the unit. After using this product several days, I'm returning it to the seller and buying out a Magellan 1700 (7" display) instead.

I purchased the TOMTOM XXL 530-S at Staples on Black Friday after Thanksgiving for $134.00 including tax.

I feel the unit is a great deal for the price.





I tried to use the adhesive disk TOMTOM provides with the unit. The adhesive disk provided with the unit did not stick well. I then did research on monting devices. I first was told by TOMTOM to look into the [...], the Proclip init is not a good choice unless you want to spend an excessive amount of money to mount your device. The ProClip is also specific to your car model which is another joke. You get a different model car you need a new Proclip. I decided to purchase the Gilsson Universal Beanbag mount for $[...] from Amazon. I noticed it had a five star rating and the price was right. The center of the BeanBag mount has a shiney plexglass so the suction cup of your GPS will grip. The BeanBag can be placed on your dash, your seat, or in any open area in the car. The Bean Bag does not move on the dash or whereever you place it. Also, you are not sticking anything on your car. Also the Bean Bag is easily transportable, so your GPS can be used in all your cars. I placed mine in front of the gear shift where there is a recess storage area. Works Great. Obviously where you place the bean bag in a location that is best for your use is subjective.



The TOMTOM XXL530-S works great. The unit comes with a nice wide screen. The program reads out streets, interesections when needed, and has mulitple views. The unit will tell you how far you are from your destination when you are approaching and has a countdown on the unit. Therefore, it will announce you are 100 yards from your destination, then if you look at the display you can see the countdown meter. You do not have to look at your odometer. The unit also has a feature that can detect redlights that take pictures. I do not need this download option, but it is available. The unit has multiple sounds. You can download many voices free and comes preprogrammed with three voices. The loudness of the voice can be regulated. Most of the street names are clear, a few have been slightly distorted due to enunciation, although they are recognizable. The unit gives you advance notice of what lane to be in for an upcoming turn or exit and gives you ample warning to make the turn.



The unit also gives you a digital display of your speed. If you have a speedometer I guess you do not really need this feature. The unit also will tell you aloud your projected arrival time if for whatever reason there is a delay and the trip is longer than projected. You have the option of purchasing the software which will also notify you when there may be trafic jams and give you altermate routes. I have not used any of the extra features such as the alternate route program, but it is available.





I would recommend you download the software that allows you to upload your unit from the company's website as soon as you get the unit so you can download the latest map updates. You have to dowload the latest map software within the first 30 days of buying the unit. You also have the option of downloading different voices and additional features you may need. Some of the additonal voices are free of charge, and some there are a fee. If you want to download revised maps after your first 30 days I beleive there is a nominal fee.



Overall the unit works great. The display is a very good size. There is some breaking in time to entering in data to the unit however, the learning curve is fast. After you program the unit a couple of times you will master putting the information into the unit. The unit memorizes your previous trips which makes entering in repeat information a breeze. Also, the unit recognizes the first several letters of a city, state, or street. Therefore, one does not have to spell out every single word. The screen is big enough to easily touch the screen and program the unit. The screen is has just the right amount of sensitivity to the touch.



I read the one negative review for this unit and I could understand his concern about mounting the unit with the adhesive disk they provide, but I could not understand the negative review on the unit itself. For the money and the quality I feel it is a good unit. Prices for these units are going down. You may want to wait afer Christmas since I was able to get a better deal after a holiday.

I've used the traffic alert system for a couple of months and it has provided good information for both rush hour/accident traffic slowdowns and weather affected traffic slowdowns. I would recommend it if you are around urban areas. I my case coverage runs out about 40 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, which works out fine for me.



Just plug it in and it automatically works on my Garmin, very easy.

I have a Garmin 765T that already came with a GTM 20 with Lifetime Traffic. The problem is that I ride a motorcycle and this power/antenna cable runs from a handle bar mount, under the gas tank, to a socket under the seat. Needless to say, moving my Garmin from motorcycle to car was a royal pain. Solution was to buy a second GTM 20 for the car. A very simple solution. I love my Garmin Nuvi and I hate this GTM device.



When I bought this I used it religiously in all types of traffic conditions, but strangely enough the information it gave me was inaccurate or worse, often causing me to make very bad decisions like avoiding a highway because it warned me of 45 minute delays when friends of mine took that same route at the same time and had no problems, or when it would tell me to avoid a jam by taking a side street in a bad neighborhood where I ended up motionless for 25 minutes before being able to proceed the two blocks needed.



And finally, the power adapter stopped transmitting electricity to my GPS at all after about 6 months, causing me to lose all power in the GPS because I'd thought it was plugged in.



Perhaps Garin's method for providing reliable traffic information will improve with time, but I think that as long as the traffic signal has to come from what is essentially a cable that can easily wear out, I don't find this to be a good way to provide traffic information to the driver... and even less of a reason to buy a device-specific "lifetime" subscription on a device that doesn't want to work for more than 6 months.

This is a great addition to your GPS. If you are in an area that the GTM 20 will work, then it is great. It will let you know if there is any delay up ahead and it will route you around the problem. Plus it charges your GPS for you. This is a must have for your GPS system!

The traffic receiver is very easy to use. No software to use. Just plug it in your car's cigarette lighter and the Garmin GPS device and you are good to go.



My only gripe is that if you click on the traffic icon on your Garmin GPS devide (mine is nuvi 660), it shows that the receiver is not activated. This is incorrect message and should be ignored.

The Rino 120 allows you, at an affordable price to know where you are in the world, where your buddies are as well and to have on-going conversation. The unit performs as advertised. I used the Rino on a game bird hunt in rugged eastern Oregon. Our party was at times a couple miles apart and separated by some deep ravines and high ridges. Sound transmission was great. Battery life seems good. The only thing to remember is to check in at intervals so that your location will continue to update on the map. The perfect tool to stay in contact and stay safe.

I bought this item for my brother, who lives in the Rockies and does quite a bit of hunting, fishing and four-wheeling in the woods. He told me that this little gem has probably saved his life at least twice since he's gotten it. He's gotten lost in the forest a few times and has used the unit to get his maps to decipher his location, plus call our other brother to get his location after getting separated. What more can you say about an item than it can actually SAVE LIVES! ;-) Most impressive little gadget.

Why should you buy this one? The price is right!



You have the GPS with the ability to send your location to other GPS units and a radio to talk to other walkie talkies on 22 communication channels. The good news is I already have 4 other walkie talkies that mate with this GPS. I love it for GEOCACHING and my 7 year old grandson can use it.



There are Icons for special places in the GPS marking menu. This is my second Garmin Rino; the other is a Rino 130. The only draw back is the monochrome display can be difficult in low level light for us seasoned citizens. You kids will have no problem; I'll get my glasses.
