I have now owned 3 Garmin GPS and 4 different ways to attach them. For flexibility and ease of use this is the best. However, if you are willing to use the third party vent attachment, it is very good as well. it takes a little effort to attach but i find the vent attachment better, once it is attached for several reasons. 1. gets it off dash. 2. No sudden stop will dislodge it. 3. It brings the unit closer to the driver so you dont have to reach.



Having said that, I again have to say the new friction mount is better than a bean bag and window attachment. It has a tacky bottom for keeping it in place which I find useful. I had to add something like this to my beanbag. it is flexible so it can match contours of the dash. it does not leave marks on the window. All and all a improvement of the bean bag. it is very easy to move from car to car, or for hiding when you want.



I have seen the comments on the stickly pad, but have only found it a plus so far.

This dash mount is amazing. You don't have to adhere it to your dashboard, causing damage when you want to take it out. It has a rubbery bottom to keep it from moving. I tried it out by taking sharp turns in my car, and the mount did not budge. The base of it is bendable to adjust to any curve or contour of your dash, so you can place your Garmin anywhere you want it. I highly recommend this product. It is worth the extra money that you pay over the competitors.

I've had Garmin products since God produced them and the bean bag option since the beginning. I travel and move the unit from one car to another. From a family van to a Corvette Z06 and this device has never moved unless maybe I roll the car! As to whether it leaves "residue" or something as others have sad in there reviews, so what and it wipes off.... What did they expact the product to be, glass smooth and holds in place because they told it too! It travels well and I thank Garmin for coming out with a better product. Steve

The 725t nuvi (aka Samantha) is fantastic in my book. First ever GPS for me so maybe that's part of it, but I have little bad to say about this one.



It was absolutely fantastic on our recent trip to Italy. Got us into and out of Florence and Sienna and Pisa to our requested parking areas without a blip. Got us through La Spezia to Monarolla, again without a blip. I decided to return our car to the airport in Rome (de Vinci) because I thought that would be the easiest place to find, even though we were staying another 4 days in the center of Rome. I told Samantha 'take me to 'Avis' at the airport. Good thing I did because there are zero signs for rental car returns at the airport. You are totally on your own--unless you have Samantha. She got us to Avis, again without a blip.



At home, it's great too. Pretty darn accurate and calculates and when needed re-calculates routes very quickly (in a 2 or 3 seconds in almost all cases).



The only negative I have is that she doesn't always get the best or fastest route. I know this from testing her on routes I know and often travel. She seems to assume that one can travel at the speed limit on city streets with no lights or stop signs. Google Maps and MapQuest for instance do a much better job in some cases. This is a minor issue with me, though, as workarounds are easy, telling her to go somewhere via a known route, or if I already know the entire route, why would I use the GPS.



This seems to be a really good buy to me.

Although Amazon did not say it, the product comes with power cord for car. I was unsure, since they did not include that in the list of items that came with the product and because they then said that "people who bought the Garmin also bought the power cord". A bit misleading. Otherwise, nuvi275t is terrific and very pocket-size. Easily found our streets in Marseille France which was very helpful.

i highly recommend this Sat/Nav for a trip to the UK. The european maps come pre-installed, making it very useful when driving in the UK. Many roads are tiny, congested, and don't have very good signs. England has the tendency to shut down certain parts of a motorway for what ever reason. This unit is very helpful in working your way around back towards your destination. The Garmin Nuvi 275T has a very neat feature that allows you to designate that you will be either driving, bicycling, or walking. So once you hit London (any city), enter pedestrian mode, and it'll guide you to your destination with a walk-friendly routing. This unit has a feature that warns if you are near a "safety camera" (aka-speed trap camera). However, it seems like the entire UK is one big speed trap so that safety-cam feature can get a bit annoying. I highly recommend you get a Sat/Nav if you'll be driving in the UK.

Before purchasing the Nuvi 275T I read the other reviews, especially those reviews that were three or lower, to see what problems the unit might present. I would rate my tech-device comfort as modest and was not looking for trouble. I decided to go ahead with the purchase and now can compare my experience to that which others described.



The GPS unit does occasionally give you wrong advice, telling you to turn one direction when the map shows another. My feeling, however, is that it is rare, and when it does happen you can usually either see that the road is one way and you can't turn into it, or just go on by the turn and it will recalculate and correct the mistake.



The computer in the unit comes up with the most direct route, which often means that the more scenic route will be missed. I don't know what one can do about that except perhaps indicate on the choices that you want to stay off the main highway. It will do that for you. You can also get yourself onto smaller roads and it will recalculate the route from there.



I most serious complaint is with Garmin itself. The easy download of the latest map which they advertise you are supposed to get for free, I found to be next to impossible. I could not get it to happen, and instead got tangled in a web of web choices that went nowhere. II even invested 20 minutes on the phone waiting for service and finally gave up. If reality lived up to Garmin's own hype about its easy access. . . well, if.

I bought the 275t for one reason: the included European maps.



I used it on a trip to Venice and environs, pedestrian and highway use, and I carried it everywhere.



Venice is the ultimate GPS obstacle course: narrow streets, pedestrian only, and endless alleyways/canals. I lost satellite signal often (signal was not accessible 50% of time) in Venice, but despite this, the GPS unit was still a help. I could usually pick up a satellite signal in a "campo" (square) and at least orientate myself. Without a satellite signal, the GPS unit provided a lighted map at night, and allowed me to locate myself by landmarks-ie. if I was walking by the "Scandanavian Hotel", I could locate the POI on the 275t and locate myself. The unit itself is very light and pocketable.



Outside of Venice, on the mainland, the GPS performed well. It made traveling the convoluted road system of various Italian cities much easier. I downloaded restaurants directly from the "Michelin" web site to the 275t prior to leaving for Italy.



There were problems-the GPS would announce "turn right" and there would be multiple right turns to choose. "Announced" street names were often not helpful, as in Italy street names are often inscribed on buildings, and not easily visible while driving. Maps were accurate, though on one occasion we drove on a "white out" (unmapped area) that the GPS could not identify. The 275t doesn't allow for "route building", you have to add "via points" working backwards from your destination, as the Garmin will always direct you immediately to the last "via point" entered. The unit does not provide any icon to show whether you are in "pedestrian" or "automobile" mode. If you don't recognize this, you will be sent on awkward routes.



I'm a big map fan, and for some time resisted buying a GPS unit for this reason. But navigating in a foreign city is vastly easier without wrestling with paper maps.

When I received the TomTom GPS, I put in a route that I had traveled over a 100 times. It routed me a good 20 miles out of my way. I contacted TomTom tech service to see if there was anyway to correct the route, either in the GPS or in a computer, and was told there was no way to correct the route other than by taking the correct route and the GPS recalcuting the route. I told tech service that if I had to look up my route on a map, I didn't need their GPS and sent it back.



I have since purchased a Garmin 765T and by using a computer, I can plan any route I choose to take and enter it into the GPS. Great product and I have received excellant support from their tech service in helping a non techie learn to operate it.

I bought the TOM TOM xl 340-S for a birthday present for my husband. We travel to Mexico each year by car and the Mexican feature was the deciding factor in this model. We have only had it three weeks so I can't comment on the Mexican component - we are leaving in a week. It was easy to install and each to use. It has the advantage of rerouting if we chose a shorter and more direct route. We haven't had it long enough to provide more information but based on the first few weeks we like it and it worked right out of the box.

After reading the reviews I was super nervous to have my hubby get this for my birthday gift. However, I really liked all the features, so we went ahead and ordered it. He likes his tomtom and has been using it for a year with no problems so I felt we could trust the brand. Anyway, here are my thoughts:



The larger screen, while something I initially didn't think was a huge deal, is great to have.



I really like the spoken street names, though it's a bummer there aren't more voices that work with that feature.



The advanced lane guidance is another feature I wanted that works great. I'd sometimes get confused with our older tomtom, not understanding where I should be on the highway with merging and exits, and that is no longer an issue. The visual helps make the spoken directions crystal clear.



I'm not totally sold on the IQ routes. I've not yet used the GPS on unfamiliar roads and at times it suggests strange ways to get places, possibly to avoid left turns, but I'm not sure. I've since changed the settings so it always asks me what kind of route I want to follow, as sometimes the shortest route is better. Not to say the IQ routes are a bad feature, but not always the best option.



Sometimes the GPS does take a few minutes to find a signal, and once in a while turning it off and on again helps speed that up, but cell phones do the same thing when you turn them off and on so it's not a huge deal for me.



As for updating the map, something that totally freaked me out after the reviews, my hubby convinced me to go ahead and try it. We did. While it did take a LONG time to finally download the map onto the device, and there wasn't enough space at first, tomtom home told us the map wouldn't fit and how much hard drive space we needed to open up. We went in and deleted the voices I wasn't planning on using and did the complete upload of the map. Everything worked fine. Just needed lots of patience.



Overall, I've been very pleased with the GPS and happy we got it. The price at Amazon is great too. We saw it in the Sunday ads last week for $100 more than the price here. Great deal, especially with the wider screen, spoken street names and advanced lane guidance!

I bought my 130S about a month ago and have been using it almost daily since. Other than the once-in-a-while slightly strange routing it has performed very well. It always gets me where I want to go, even if the route is slightly different than I'd have picked on my own. The unit picks up satellites well, even in my house. I connect to TomTom Home once a week to update satellite positions, so it connects well.

The reason I'm writing is that when I got the unit my maps were 6 quarters old. I did the Tools > Use Latest Map Guarantee method to update my map and was told that my unit was not eligible for the updates. I checked this option each week and got the same message every time. Yesterday, after having the unit for more than a month, I tried again and was pleasantly surprised with a notice saying that updates were available. So, I downloaded the updates and now my maps are current. Anyone know what's up with that? I'm much more happy with my unit now that I know I have up-to-date maps.

The other thing I like about the unit is the option to mount it on my dashboard, rather than on the windshield. The legal windshield location in California is very inconvenient to use. I stuck the provided disk on the top of the dashboard in a convenient place and the unit is now easily accessable with no obstruction of my view of the road.

I purchased this TomTom for my wife who was flying into New Jersey, renting a car, and driving into the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, then back to the airport. She has ner used a GPS before, but said she had no trouble figuring out how to put in her destinations. She stated that the turn by turn instructions with street names were clear and easy to understand.



Then I loaned the TomTom to my mother in law to help her find a wedding in Louisiana. She is not too tech savvy, but had no trouble whatsoever.



I have played with it driving through my hometown and noticed one or two streets incorrectly named, but no big deal. I did go to TomTom's website to see if I could snag a free map update as some reviewers state they were able to do, but with no luck. This refurb unit has maps "four quarters" old and TomTom wanted something like $79 for new ones. Heck, if I had that kind of change lying around I wouldn't have bought a refurbished unit in the first place!



So let me get to the point: For the money I can't imagine getting a nicer GPS, and one that tells you the street names too. So what if you can't upload new maps for free. How often do you need to go to some newly developed street anyway? Mainly you use a GPS to find somewhere in a city or state for which you are unfamiliar. Snatch up this TomTom before they sell out!

We just finished a trip to Glacier National Park, Whitefish and Columbia Falls, Montana. The Tom Tom performed very well and was especially helpful in getting us around inside the City of Spokane. GPS units are very helpful in getting you out of difficult spots. The major fault with all of the sales material on the Amazon site is that no where does it say that you will have to buy the map updates. And you will have to buy the back issues depending on when your unit went into service. This being the case, you would be better off paying more and buying a brand new unit. Customer service got my update price down to about $60, but that was the best they would do. Updates are about $40 a year. I am going to have to buy six quarters, or about sixty dollars.



Also true: I guess that you could buy the unit and never update the maps. We have a dozen old maps around our house and the information is mostly accurate. The Tom Tom might serve you very well if you never went anywhere where new streets go in.
