 "Very Happy" 2009-11-14
By TexCruise (Texas Panhandle)
I bought this to use in our other vehicles as I already have a guidance system in my pickup. I researched these things very hard before I bought my Magellan and I'm VERY happy with the 4700. In fact, I like it much better than the one that came in my 2008 Silverado. I have used them at the same time, just to compare and the Magellan wins hands down. Voice is loud and clear. The only con I have found is that the voice does get muffled when it gives a long, detailed instuctions. Actually, it's kind of funny at times. I do like the lane instructions and the overhead signs. The display is crisp and clear and I really like how the map changes as I change directions vs. the one in my pickup that makes me feel like I'm driving backwards at times. Addresses are easy to enter or find. POIs are very easy to find. Love it and highly recommend it.

 "It's a winner!" 2009-11-13
By J. E. Meyers (Houston, TX USA)
This GPS gives intelligent routing and is very easy to use. I compared it in road tests with a Garmin 765T. I'm returning the Garmin.

I am not intending to try to disparage Garmin here. I'm hoping to let you know with what I am comparing this GPS when I say it is excellent. After all, only these two GPS'es comprise my hands-on experience with such units.

The benefit I want most from a GPS is accurate navigation assistance. Magellan delivers on this and the Garmin does not. That's about it and that's my main point. The Magellan excelled at keeping me on the best roads and getting me to my destinations with minimal stress and frustration. The Garmin 765T often told me to turn one way while the arrow pointed the other way and seems to prefer looping FAR around cities regardless of the chosen routing options and traffic conditions. The Garmin even took me off interstates for no reason and then put me back on the same road 20 miles later to continue the trip.

Garmin support told me to set "via" points to stop this problem but I prefer to just send it back and stick with the 4700 that requires less fiddling.

 "Magellan 4700" 2009-11-12
By Helayne Van Houten
I was happy with the price but not at all happy with the way it was packaged for shipping. THe sender just cut some cardboard and wrapped it around the original box. I am an online shopper and this was the worst...no protection except for the items packaging itself. Glad it was not raining or squashed.........

"No Update For Mac Users" 2009-11-11
By C. Fernandes (NYC)
This device replaced a TomTom 730 that was lost in August 09 it has been fairly reliable since then. Today (11.11.09) tried to update the software only to find out they do not support Apple's Mac software. The service tech suggested that Bootcamp be used and that I should call Apple or the Maestro unit could be shipped out to Magellan for an update. This is not smart business in my opinion someone at Magellan has dropped the ball (or apple) big time.

This device works if you have a Windows PC but not for Mac owners who don't want or can't have Bootcamp installing XP on their computers.

 "Awesome" 2009-11-09
By Alicia K. Williams (NEW YORK)
This is the best GPS I've owned by Magellan. I've had three others thus far. Very reliable and accurate. Minor issues are slow start up. The car charger also seems to bend into the unit causing it to get damaged. Otherwise I love the highway assist and especially the blue tooth. The unit automatically updates all your numbers from your phone on the the Magellan phone book. I also wish there was an easier way to install favorite addresses like the Roadmate models. Costly GPS but well worth it. Shop around different places have different cost. Amazon seems to be the cheapest but I got mine from J&R paid a little more but I needed my unit ASAP for an upcoming trip.

 "USELESS ITEM" 2009-10-19
By Linda Gallego (Utah)
I found this item to be a pretty useless item. This holder does not allow the Tomtom to sit upright. The sound of the Tomtom is muffled because the speaker is facing down in the holder. The Tomtom kept sliding off of the holder. I would not recommend this to anyone.

 "Does the job, sometimes" 2009-09-03
By Kenneth A. Lenz Sr. (Atlanta GA)
Works fine in my car, except the safety hook will not stick well, and my GPS wound up hitting the floor of my car. Look closely at your dash for a fairly level dashboard, my wifes car has several "humps" that do not allow it to sit on the dash in a convienent location.

"Dash mount is wrong size" 2009-08-30
By James P. Stodder (Connecticut USA)
The Amazon webpage for this item reads "This mount works with all TomTom products..." Not True! I have the TomTom GO 720 widescreen, and it is way too big for the dash mount. Now I have to go the trouble of returning it. Amazon should change the ad copy.

I had used the Magellan Maestro 3100 my sister has and was impressed with the unit. I needed a GPS unit and stupidly bought a Tom Tom unit because of the price. What a big mistake! I am real happy I bought this unit to replace the Tom Tom unit. Buy this GPS!

 "Great value" 2009-10-30
By Ric (New England)
This is the smaller screen but I have never had a problem viewing it. For the price this is the best deal out there; I was able to get two for the family instead of one more expensive one. I also have left it in the car through summer and New England winter (probably shouldn't) and it has been working great for over 2 years. There are others out there with more features, but this is the best deal for a no-kidding GPS that will get you from point A to B.

 "Piece of Crap" 2009-10-24
By pitchperfect (Folsom, CA United States)
My Magellan Maestro died about a month ago and I needed to go on a long trip out of state. I saw that this one was a whole lot cheaper but still the same brand so I went ahead and bought it. BIG MISTAKE. This model is much more cheaply made than my last and was completely unacceptable. Let me see if I can remember everything that was wrong with it.

1) The processor is w a y t o o s l o w. It seriously took 2 minutes to enter an address in (which is not good while driving). And then, it would frequently freeze up while on the route, making me miss turns. What use is the thing if it can't tell me when to turn right?

2) To update the software you have to have it plugged into the usb port of your computer to allow the data transfer, but it doesn't provide power. For that you have to have it plugged into your cigarette lighter. Yes, in the car. So the first time I tried charging it completely in the car and then brought it in to my computer to update. The thing ran out of power before the update finished. So the second time I brought my laptop out to the car so the gps could be plugged in. After like 8 hours the update finished, but by then it had drained the battery in my car.

3) The suction cup didn't stick. It had a hole in it or something. That was just annoying.

4) The trip calculator sucked. On the way home on my trip it calculated me a 24 hour route (going through a different state!) for what was really a 9 hour route. No, it was set on "fastest time," I checked.

5) This model did not have "previous addresses" like my old one. That caused me some problems in my business.

6) The car adapter was much more cheaply made than my old model. I don't know if this was a coincidence but a few days after getting this piece of crap my car wouldn't turn on and the battery and alternator had to be replaced. The battery light still hasn't gone off again. I guess the gps might not have been the cause of this, but I must admit I highly suspect it.

So of course I recommend you avoid buying this piece of crap. It actually makes driving harder. I think Magellan ought to recall and destroy all of this model before it causes some serious accidents.
