 "Some kind of beautiful!" 2010-02-08
By Joseph Goslawski (Southington, CT United States)
I bought this GPS for myself because the price was right and my present GPS was a distraction to manipulate while I was driving. My wife never would use a GPS because she found them to be too complicated/cumbersome to use. After installing the Garmin nuvi 850 my wife and I went for a rode trip. I was having some trouble getting the GPS to understand my voice so my wife spoke the locations and instructions to the voice recognition enabled GPS. It did exactly what she said on the first try. Needless to say, this is now my wife's GPS and she's happy to use it. p.s. I bought a Garmin nuvi 855 two weeks later for myself!:0)

Having voice recognition is great. Bought myself one a few months ago, bought this one for my folks because it is so easy to use.

"So far volume is unacceptably low" 2009-12-17
By Bargain Addict (Minnesota)
I haven't had a chance to learn all the features of this GPS which I bought to replace a Garmin 360 that was lost or stolen. However, in using it as a basic navigator, where I punched in addresses and then held it in my lap and watched it as a passenger, it seemed to work as well as the 360, BUT the volume was so low we could barely hear it with the radio off. If I hadn't been watching it so I knew to listen for the next spoken command we probably would have missed our turn. And this is after we set the volume to the maximum. Later, we set it to transmit through the FM radio and while the loudness was acceptable, there was too much static and interference to make this a viable option. I plan to check the manual to see if I can change the default FM station to one that is less prone to interference, but if not, I will probably be returning this unit. I haven't even tried the voice recognition software yet so I can't comment on its effectiveness.

 "Not bad" 2009-11-11
By Jay Byrd (Lexington, SC USA)
I bought this model after owning the 205 and 255 Garmin GPS units which I was very satisfied with. So I moved up to this one because of the wider screen and it came highly recommended from a family member. Quite honestly I was disappointed in the battery life and the voice recognition thing. The original battery I have already replaced and the new one, too, will not hold a charge over more than a couple of days even when unplugged and turned completely off in the console. I never had that problem with the other models. The voice recognition thing works sometimes but it hates my southern drawl and I hate screaming at it while I'm driving so I just use it manually. I've had this unit about 2 months and a couple of times it has just frozen up on me and I had to turn it off and remove the battery to reboot the system. Like the other smaller units it will get you to the right street every time, but don't count on the location flag being exact. Another disappointment was the multi-lane mode. When I saw it advertised the screen was in the multi-lane mode at an intersection, so I naturally thought the screen was always in that mode. In that mode you actually see the lanes and traffic signs, not just the triangle moving along a map. On my first trip I discovered that it rarely goes into the multi-lane mode and only when there is more than one lane exiting the same direction. What a bummer! Ending on a positive note, because of the larger screen I can read it easily.
